According to Affinity Health, a leading provider of high-quality healthcare, caffeine can help improve concentration, alertness, and mood. Still, it can also adversely affect the body.

Caffeine is one of the world’s most consumed psychoactive substances. It is frequently found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, energy drinks, chocolate, and over-the-counter medications.

Known for its stimulating effects, caffeine can help to improve concentration, alertness, and mood. However, caffeine can also negatively affect the body, and many people who consume it regularly may experience withdrawal symptoms if they try to stop it.

“Caffeine withdrawal occurs when someone who regularly consumes caffeine suddenly reduces or stops their intake,” says Murray Hewlett, CEO of Affinity Health.

“Symptoms can appear 12 to 24 hours after the last caffeine dosage and last for several days or weeks. The severity of symptoms varies based on the amount of caffeine consumed as well as the individual’s tolerance and sensitivity to the substance.”

What Does Caffeine Do to The Body?

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that affects the body in several ways. When consumed, caffeine enters the bloodstream and travels to the brain, blocking adenosine receptors, a natural compound that helps promote sleep and suppress arousal.

By blocking these receptors, caffeine increases the activity of neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, and acetylcholine, temporarily boosting energy, alertness, and mood.

Additionally, caffeine can increase heart, blood, and metabolic rates, leading to increased calorie burning and potential weight loss.

How Much Caffeine Is Safe to Consume?

The amount of caffeine considered safe to consume varies based on several factors, including age, weight, overall health status, and sensitivity to caffeine.

Generally speaking, moderate caffeine intake is considered safe for healthy adults, with a daily intake of up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine being the recommended limit. This amount equals around four cups of brewed coffee, ten cans of cola, or two energy shots.

However, some individuals may be more sensitive to caffeine; even lower doses can lead to adverse effects.

Signs And Symptoms of Caffeine Withdrawal

Regular caffeine consumption can cause the brain to adapt to the presence of caffeine, leading to changes in the number and sensitivity of adenosine receptors, which caffeine blocks.

When you suddenly reduce or stop caffeine consumption, the brain no longer receives its stimulating effects. As a result, your adenosine receptors become overactive and lead to withdrawal symptoms.

Symptoms of caffeine withdrawal can include:

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty Concentrating
  • Depression
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Sleep disturbances

How To Manage Caffeine Withdrawal

Managing caffeine withdrawal can be challenging, but several strategies can help.

One of the most effective ways to reduce symptoms is to gradually decrease caffeine intake over time rather than quitting cold turkey. This can help minimise symptoms’ severity and make them more manageable.

Other strategies for managing caffeine withdrawal include:

Drinking water: Staying hydrated can help to flush caffeine out of the system and reduce symptoms like headaches and fatigue.

Eating a balanced diet: Eating a balanced diet can help to provide the body with the nutrients it needs to function correctly, which can help to reduce symptoms of caffeine withdrawal.

Getting enough sleep: Getting enough sleep can help to reduce symptoms of fatigue and improve overall well-being.

Exercising: Exercise can help to improve mood and energy levels and can also help to reduce stress.

Using over-the-counter pain relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help to relieve headaches and other symptoms of caffeine withdrawal.

Seeking professional help: Caffeine withdrawal can sometimes be severe enough to require medical attention. If symptoms are particularly severe or persistent, it may be necessary to seek professional help from a healthcare provider.
