William James, the father of psychology, stated that the most fundamental psychological need is to be appreciated. We all love when our effort is met with appreciation. Gratitude can also significantly improve the quality of your life and that of its recipient. While a simple “thank you” is enough, once in a while, it’s okay to make grand gestures to show it’s real. These are some simple ways you can appreciate that extra special person in your life.

  • Send Them Their Favourite Treat

My friend is obsessed with these cupcake jars from Sweetspot so every now and then I send her a few jars just to let her know she’s my person. Sweets are a great way to show your appreciation. They appeal to our reward centres and make us feel good. For me, my favourite treat is a Cold stone ice-cream (in case you were wondering).

  • Leave A Generous Tip

Tipping might be a foreign concept according to many Africans but it’s always good to appreciate people in the service industry.  This gesture shows you respect their effort to provide a pleasant service. It might be their job but it’s not an easy one.

  • Do House Chores

Remember when we were kids and we’d do all the chores at home so our mums would let us play with our friends. What we didn’t realize was that by doing chores, it wasn’t a punishment. Our parents taught us about showing appreciation with simple acts. Nothing beats coming home to a clean house.

  • Make Them A Playlist

“Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart.”  These are the beautiful word of Pablo Casals. Through music, we are able to express ourselves where plain words often fail.  Making someone a list of your favourite songs lets them know that they play a significant part in your life.

  • Show Off Their Gift

So, what happens when your generous boyfriend buys you expensive jewellery or shoes and you don’t have the money to reciprocate? It’s easy. Show it off. By bragging about a gift, the giver will know that you liked it, even if you didn’t like it. This makes them feel appreciated.

  • Watch Their Favourite Movies

Lord knows how many people I’ve tortured to watch The Notebook with me and they did because they know I’d do the same for them. Watching their favourite movie not only shows you care but is also a great way to spend time together and learn about the person.

  • Write A Note

A tangible message that will always remind them of how you feel is one of the best ways to express emotions. You can go for cliché lines like “what would I do without you in my life?” or express what is in your heart in its raw form. Both ways are highly effective in showing appreciation.
