But how much do they really earn? Here’s what vice-chancellors of top South African universities were earning in 2013.
Unisa’s Prof MS Makhanya was reportedly the highest earning vice-chancellor in 2014 taking home approximately R4.2million that year.
Most of the country’s vice-chancellors earn more than the president of South Africa.

Prof A Habib – University of Witwatersrand – R3.4 million

Prof ND Kgwadi – North-West University – R2.8 million
Dr S Badat – Rhodes University – R2.4 million

Wits Vuvuzela reported that Habib’s salary was ‘more than R2.million’ in 2013, it has now been increased to around R3.5million.
University of Johannesburg’s Rensburg was earning R3.3million in 2013, now standing at R3.9million.
