Cape Town was last night named the World Wildlife Fund’s Global Earth Hour capital for 2014.
[full]The announcement was made at a ceremony in Vancouver, Canada. The South African city pipped 163 other entrants, including Chicago, Seoul, Copenhagen and Antwerp.
The award recognises the city’s innovative actions on climate change and its dedication to pursuing the goal of a sustainable urban environment.
WWF SA CEO Morné du Plessis said the NGO had been impressed by the city’s “considerable attempts” to deal with climate change and the “exceptional will” to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
