“There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to helping others without expecting anything in return.” – Nelson Mandela. In the spirit of a great leader who took Ubuntu to a whole new level and in celebration of Mandela Day today (July 18), Fairmont Zimbali Resort spent their 67 minutes with the street children of I Care Outreach and Rehabilitation Centre in Durban.

Apart from donations, Fairmont Zimbali Resort also spent more than 67 minutes of their time treating the children to hearty home-cooked meals and a cool drink. To add to the cheer of the day, the team sat with the kids to paint rocks which they wrote positive messages on to mark the celebration of Madiba’s 101st birthday. The decorated rocks were then placed in the I Care garden where the youth can view their rocks and messages every time, they return to the community centre. Finally, everybody gathered together to sing and cut the ‘Madiba birthday cake’ before indulging.

“Thank you to everyone who donated to this worthy cause, and for creating the biggest smiles on all of these faces!” says Shantel Gouder from the I-Care team. The centres’ objective is to assist in providing street children a brighter future by installing healthy life skills and a good work ethic to those children who go through the rehabilitation program. Boasting over 20 years of experience, the I Care team interacts with children living on the streets and provides them with a supportive family I-Care home where they can then begin their rehabilitation and development program.
