Popular Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, Dr. Deon Weyers and his team have collected hundreds of pre-owned bras to make a significant impact on the lives of women across South Africa. Highlighted during a handover event at his practice in Fourways, Johannesburg, the occasion brought together some very special women and donors.  They had responded to the call for the public to donate their unwanted, pre-loved bras to be distributed to women in communities where underwear can be considered an unaffordable, luxury item.

“It was so heartwarming to see the generosity of our donors who not only decluttered their own underwear drawers but also encouraged friends and family to donate,” says Dr. Weyers. “The original target was to collect 100 bras, but by the International Women’s Day deadline over 650 bras had made their way through the practice. One patient even traveled from Cape Town and sacrificed luggage space to make the delivery!”

How did the ” Raise The Bra” Project come about?

A number of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures performed by Dr. Weyers are breast-related; whether breast augmentation, reduction or reconstruction. This made the team think about the bras that patients no longer require, and the “Raise The Bra” project was born.

The team wanted to distribute the bras to those most in need and have joined forces with ZABRA – AfreeBra initiative to achieve this. The international volunteer network works with organizations looking after women in their care, who can benefit from receiving bras free of charge.

Declutter and Donate

There is still an opportunity to donate! During the 21-day lockdown and the challenges of Covid-19, there’s never been a more important time to think of uplifting others in need.

“We’re all going to have a lot of time on our hands”, admits Dr. Weyers, “Why not use the time wisely, declutter and donate your unwanted, pre-loved bras after the 16thof April 2020.”

Donations can be made at the collection point at Suite B22, Fourways Life Hospital after the 16h of April 2020.
