South Africans were definitely not made to exist in isolation. They like gatherings and being sociable and that most people are really struggling to adhere to lockdown regulations. Unplanned visits with friends and family have become rare occurrences and is something that everybody looks forward to.

Jan Rhaap’s latest single, MAAK JOU MAAK(E), was inspired by such an unplanned hunting weekend and has a story that everyone can relate to. “It is about an unplanned visit with my cousin (Bulletjie) and his friend (Jukkie or Jurgens). They often challenged each other to ‘Maak jou Maak’ throughout the weekend, which is a saying we use in the Northern Cape that means to ‘show what you are made of’,” the artist shares about the meaning behind his latest release.

MAAK JOU MAAK(E) is an Afrikaans pop-rock track, which he wrote with Loki Rothman, that perfectly complements his raspy voice. It is one of those songs that makes you stop to listen when hearing it for the first time. “In our current situation, we have all come to treasure those unplanned visits with our loved ones. That is why the message of the song will speak to the heart of each and every South African,” he adds.

The music video, which was produced by Vonk Musiek, tells the story of four friends who have a reunion in their old band room. “My character shows what he is made of by winning all of the games they play throughout the video,” the artist explains. “What makes it special, is that I am telling the story while also being featured in the story.”

MAAK JOU MAAK(E) follows in the successful footsteps of previous releases like Huisie in die Bos, which he co-wrote with Juan Boucher and whose video has already garnered more than 2.4 million views on YouTube, as well as Ramskilpad that not only topped several radio charts, but has also been viewed by more than 300 000 people online.

Jan Rhaap, a.k.a. Werner Burger, currently lives in the Northern Cape. When he is not on stage, he shares a farm with his father and brother just outside of Niekerkshoop; A small town between Griekwastad and Prieska.

This talented thirty-six-year-old comes from a musical family and has always had a deep appreciation for meaningful music. At the age of twenty, he taught himself to play the guitar. He worked in the agricultural industry before making the decision to pursue music full-time at the age of twenty-nine.

After touring with Adam Tas for two years and being his opening act, his solo career finally took off and he has since released three albums and several successful singles.

Over the years, he has had numerous career highlights, including two Ghoema nominations for Newcomer of the Year (2015) and Best Alternative Album of the Year (2017) and in 2017 he also had the privilege of singing Hardekole with Ricus Nel, Refentse, Appél and other artists during this prestigious awards ceremony. Just before lockdown, he also had the opportunity of performing with other celebrities on the 2020 Bok Radio Boat Cruise.

Jan Rhaap, with his raspy voice, captivating lyrics and warm stage personality, has managed to build a steady career for himself in the local music industry.

He is currently busy working on his fourth studio album which will be released before the end of the year and cannot wait to share this new chapter of his career with his fans. And if MAAK JOU MAAK(E) is anything to go by, the future is looking very promising for this versatile musician. The song contains all the ingredients of a bona fide radio hit that is going to remain popular for years to come.
