Turbine Art Fair celebrates 10 years of contemporary South African art from 21 – 24 July

Must read

Turbine Art Fair celebrates 10 years of contemporary South African art.

Celebrating ten years of the Turbine Art Fair (TAF), this tenth edition will be held underground in the Oxford Parks Precinct in Rosebank.  Turbine Art Fair is not just an art fair but a lifestyle event!  A fabulous showcase of the talent we have in South Africa and a great way to start collecting art in a unique and un-daunting way bringing the best galleries and artists under one roof.

“The Turbine Art Fair has undoubtedly made its mark as an not-to-be-missed event for art lovers and those looking to learn more about South Africa’s rich art scene. With over 40 galleries and exhibits from across South Africa there’s bound to be something to catch everyone’s eye,” says Glynis Hyslop, Founder Turbine Art Fair.

TAF 2022 has again partnered with Artsy, the world’s largest online art marketplace. Artsy believes that the process of buying art should be as brilliant as art itself.  “This partnership with Artsy is a perfect fit with our vision to showcase artists and grow the market for African art as well as elevate art collecting across a wider market” adds Hyslop.

TAF 22 will be showcasing special projects featuring work across all artistic mediums such as prints and multiples, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, textiles and so much more.  The special projects include: TAF Unearthed, TAF Grad Show, TAF Capsule, and TAF Off the Grid.

TAF UNEARTHED
TAF Unearthed was developed by Turbine Art Fair as a mentorship programme aimed at young artists and creatives to enable sustainable creative professional practices. Started in 2014 as the annual Fresh Produce and Talent Unlocked artist mentorship programme. TAF modified the structure of its mentorship to address the needs of artists and prepare and propel them through uncertainty. The mentorship programme has and continues to evolve and adapt to the contextual needs of artists in an everchanging socio-economic climate. Artists are taken through conceptual, artistic and creative business mentoring to help solidify the foundations of their careers, resulting in a curated group exhibition at the Turbine Art Fair in July.

CURATOR: Teboho Relasai.  PARTICIPATING ARTISTS:Aneesah Girie, Danna Margo, Gemma Sheppard, Lambi Chibambo, Lerato Ntili, Natali Downing, Pholile Hlongwane, Themba Given Msiza, Tshegofatso Tlatsi, and Tumelo Mtimkhulu.

TAF GRAD SHOW
The Turbine Art Fair GRAD SHOW platform offers a unique opportunity for these artists – otherwise unsupported in their transition from institution to market – to engage and network as professionals in the earliest stages of their careers. Critical engagement and a viewing audience are central to building a sustainable practice. Without the ability to filter through minds and generate dialogue, the works sit idle without purpose.  This exhibition provides an overview of the current climate of production from institutions nationally in Bloemfontein, Gqeberha, Durban and Makhanda, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Stellenbosch.

CURATOR: Michaela Limberis and Siwa Mgoboza.   PARTICIPATING ARTISTS: Aaron Adriaan, Bekezela Mabena, Ben Mphande, Brian Montshiwa, Cassian Robbertze, Daniel Retief, Emeka Bryan Ntone-Edjabe, Hlavutelo Ngobeni, Jeffrey Allan, Jess Botma, Kaelo Molefe, Kagiso Gundane, Lindokuhle Ndlovu, Luca Evans, Michael Wilson, Nthabeleng Phepenene, PK Mohanoe, Rebecca D’Eramo, Rohini Amratlal, Samukelo Gqola, Sibhoan Doughty, Siphesile Ntsingwana, Siyabonga Ntshali, and Thando Phenyane

TAF CAPSULE
This year TAF will be showcasing a featured artwork by renowned artist, Pat Mautloa, recognized as one of the pioneers of modernist painting in South Africa. Mautloa will be showing large-scale work that is broken up into multiple smaller pieces, all to be sold separately. This will allow young collectors to experience how it feels to own a piece of art, literally without owning the whole piece. This special project is aimed at considering what it may be like to rethink the conventional approach to investing, democratising the art investment world which is often only accessible to the few people who can afford it.

CURATOR: Turbine Art Fair.   PARTICIPATING ARTIST: Kagiso Patrick Mautloa

TAF OFF THE GRID
TAF Off The Grid is dedicated to mid-career artists outside of the main gallery circuit in an effort to support and sustain their careers. The exhibition is titled A Pebble in the Mouth.

CURATOR: Maja Marx
PARTICIPATING ARTISTS: Jeanne Hoffman, Yonela Makoba, Dominique Edwards, Bella Knemeyer and Sivan Zeffertt
