Genre-defying and multi-award-winning violinist David Garrett shares a track from his latest Deutsche Grammophon album. With its carefully curated and very personal selection of brilliant showpieces and soulful melodies, Iconic is inspired by the artistry of Garrett’s legendary 20th-century forebears – icons such as Heifetz, Kreisler and Menuhin. In this single, an exquisite new arrangement of Schubert’s Ave Maria, the virtuoso violinist duets with star tenor Andrea BocelliAve Maria will be available to stream and download from 29 July 2022 and is accompanied by a music video, out the same day.
Iconic will be released by Deutsche Grammophon digitally, on CD (standard and deluxe editions) and on vinyl (2 LPs) on 4 November 2022.

Schubert’s song began life almost 200 years ago with words by Sir Walter Scott, translated into German. Its original refrain opens with the words “Ave Maria”, and this led to the Latin text of the traditional Catholic prayer being adapted to Schubert’s melody. Hugely popular in this form, the song has been heard in many different versions over the years, including its prominent appearance in films as chronologically and stylistically distinct as Disney’s Fantasia (1940) and The Batman (2022).

Simple and moving, the new Iconic arrangement – which like all those on the album is by David Garrett and his guitarist Franck van der Heijden – captures the essence of the original song. Andrea Bocelli brings his pure tenor tones to a heartfelt rendition of the prayer, while Garrett weaves a rich and magical violin line around the vocals. Guitarist-conductor Van der Heijden and the players of Orchestra The Prezent support the soloists with a gently flowing accompaniment throughout.

As a young musician, David Garrett immersed himself in the recordings of violinists such as Zino Francescatti, Arthur Grumiaux, Jascha Heifetz, Fritz Kreisler and Yehudi Menuhin. Having fallen in love with a particular aspect of their repertoire as well as their musicianship, he wanted to record many of the popular encores and other miniatures they made their own. Iconic now presents more than 20 atmospheric short works, in a wide range of styles, all newly arranged for violin, guitar and orchestra. Featuring composers as varied as Vivaldi, Bach, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns, Dvořák and Shostakovich, and including duets with Garrett’s former teacher Itzhak Perlman, flautist Cocomi and trumpeter Till Brönner, as well as Andrea Bocelli, Iconic is the perfect tribute to the violinist’s idols and to music that will delight today’s listeners just as it did the audiences of a century ago.
