HOME IS AT THE HEART OF FRIKKIE VAN BILJON’S NEW AFRIKAANS SINGLE

Home means different things to different people. For some it’s simply a place to live while for others it embodies something deeper, a place where they can be true to themselves and feel love and acceptance.

Regardless of where we come from or where life takes us, every person has a concept of home, which is what Frikkie van Biljon’s new single examines. Titled HUIS, the song asks the question, ‘where is home?’. The lyrics for the track was written by Frikkie and Paul Venter, with music by Jolanda Becker. It was produced by Jattie de Beer at Artistry Productions.

The song came about as a result of Paul moving abroad. “Paul and I have been friends since our university days. When he decided to emigrate to New Zealand in 2018, I paid him one last visit,” says Frikkie. “We wanted to write a song for old times’ sake and naturally, with him leaving the country, the question came up about where home is. We concluded that home is not a place, but a person or people.”

Frikkie believes that HUIS will resonate with listeners as the meaningful lyrics address every person’s search for home while the melody takes the listener on a journey. “To me, the song emphasises what is important in life – my family,” he says.

A music video for the single will be released on 2 September 2022.

A relative newcomer to the industry, Frikkie has been immersed in music his entire life. Born in Klerksdorp, he delivered his first solo performance at the age of five and in primary school he entered a talent competition, which secured him a record deal. Unfortunately, his family relocated, and he couldn’t pursue the opportunity. He did, however, continue performing and opened for such artists as Jannie du Toit, Christa Steyn, Rina Hugo and Steve Hofmeyr while still at school. His passion followed him to university, where he helped write, plan, and direct several concerts and music productions.

“Music is an integral part of me. It has always been my escape and my way of expressing my emotions,” he explains. “While I had been performing since a very young age, it was during my time at university where I truly found myself and my voice. So many incredible people and opportunities crossed my path, and I could fully put my talents to use.”

Although he loved writing and performing, he took a break from music after completing his studies. However, he decided to pursue his dream in 2017 and has since released five singles – Altyd By My, Elke Tree, Hofnar, Elke Stukkie Kaap, In Die Oomblik – as well as three Christmas tracks. In 2018 he also went on to release his first EP, Dis Wie Ek Is.

Frikkie says that the past five years in the industry have taught him appreciation. “Artists put not only time and effort into their work, but they bare their hearts and souls. This is something that often goes unnoticed as we only experience the final product. The last few years have taught me to acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of all artists, even if I would not normally listen to their music.”

Besides music, the husband, father of four and full-time software developer has a passion for the simpler things in life, such as baking bread and tending a vegetable garden. He is also continuously seeking opportunities to make music and in addition to working on a few projects, he is planning several live performances this year. “My family always comes first, but my children are at an age now where I can focus on my music and performing again,” he says.
