CAPE TOWN’S MARCO DE VIL EXPLORES THE REPRESENTATION OF A TOXIC RELATIONSHIP WITH NEW SINGLE, ‘DON’T WANT YOU BACK’
Cape Town model and rapper, Marco De Vil has released his latest single, “Don’t Want You Back” which he describes as a ‘direct and true representation of a toxic relationship’. “This song comes from my own past experience of a toxic relationship that once had put me on a collision course with emotions fuelled by anger, insecurities, distrust and total sadness. Don’t Want You Back was made for those wanting to let go, unpack and release everything that has hurt one in the pursuit of love.”
When it comes to Marco and his sound, he would describe it as ‘honest, vulnerable, and dark with a hint of despair. As someone who had always turned to music as an escape, Marco hopes to ‘comfort, help and heal as many people and kids with his music. “I want them to know that they aren’t alone”. He goes on to explain that “Growing up, there was no one around. I found serenity in the voices of artists and their music, which gave me closure in moments where I felt alone and vulnerable and ready to end it all.”
As someone who has been very open about the difficult environment he grew up in, he believes that those experiences have shaped him into the artist he is today. “Growing up in a hostile environment faced with physical, verbal and mental abuse has allowed me to find portals of escapism in films and mainly in writing. It also allowed me to be open and vulnerable with my emotions, not bottling them up but letting them out instead.”
Marco continues to prove that you do not have to be a product of your circumstances but can decide for yourself what your life is going to be. He had signed a music management deal with Plus Two Seven Management after being found online. “I was originally scouted on Facebook for one of my freestyle videos over Wiz Kid and Skepta’s hit song “Far Away” which opened communications between myself and the team at Plus Two Seven. The following week I was in the studio working on tracks like Drugs & Suicide and a few others.”
This is only the beginning of what Marco has to offer the music industry. When asked what piece of advice he would give his younger self, he shared the following – “I am so proud of you. I am so proud of everything you’ve overcome. You are brave and I am going to make sure that we live the rest of our life with no more fear and no more pain.” One can definitely feel inspired by Marco’s outlook on life and the way he has continued to strive for a better life not just for him but for his family.
Marco leaves us with this last piece of advice: “Life is short and it’s important to live it with purpose,” he explains. “We are only really blessed with 3 days – The day we are born, the day we find out why and the day we die, so let’s make the most of it.”
