Zozibini Tunzi urges South African youth to protect themselves

In a heartfelt message shared via Instagram, former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi has called upon South African youth to prioritize their own protection.

UNAIDS reports that women, adolescent girls and young women between the ages of 15-24 years old in South Africa are significantly affected by HIV, accounting for 25% of new infections.

At the same time, young men are less likely to be diagnosed and treated, increasing their likelihood of transmitting HIV to their partners. This means there’s all the more reason for the youth to embrace their agency, make informed decisions about healthy sexual behaviours, and learn their options: wear a condom, take PrEP, abstain from sex, know your status, and give or ask for consent.

“By making informed choices, you are taking the first step in protecting yourself and making a positive impact on your health and the lives of your loved ones” commented, Zozibini Tunzi.

ForeverWena is a South African movement that aims to empowers people to take charge of their sexual health. It encourages open discussions that are both factual and informative about healthy sexual behavior and choices.

Dr Linda-Gail Bekker, Professor of Medicine and CEO of the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation adds, “As a nation, we need to address the ongoing high rate of HIV infections and #ForeverWena is certainly an empowering way to do it. Every young South African deserves access to accurate, tailored information and resources, so they can make informed decisions and healthier sexual choices – for themselves, their partners, and their collective future.”
