TATJANA SMITH HAS HER GOLDEN MOMENT IN WOMEN’S 100M BREASTSTROKE OLYMPIC FINAL
SA’s Swimming Champion’s Triumphant return to the Olympics to claim her gold medal.
Johannesburg, July 30th, 2024 – South African swimming champion Tatjana Smith, took gold in the Women’s 100m at the Paris La Defense Arena last night, marking a significant Golden Moment in her spectacular career and time of 1:05.28, edging out China’s Qianting Tang (2nd) and Mona McSharry from Ireland (3rd) on the podium.
Smith became the firm favourite to take gold after her victory in both her heat and semi-final in the 100m, at the Paris La Defense Arena this past Sunday. Amazingly, she touched the wall, winning both races on the day in 1:05.00, quicker than the time she swam in Tokyo, where she won silver in the event with a time of 1:05.22.
The SA swimming superstar also won gold in Tokyo 2021 where she set the current Olympic record for the 200m breaststroke event at a time of 2:18.95.
Smith is also part of the Corona Cero South Africa Athletes group, which includes swimming legend Chad Le Clos, track stars Wayde van Niekerk and Akani Simbine and surfers Sarah Baum, and Matthew Macgillivray.
