The Nicarela Charity and their annual Parkview Christmas Market, for example, exemplify this spirit of community-driven change.
For 15 years, Nicarela Charity, a volunteer-driven organisation, has focused its efforts on supporting those most in need within their community. They have raised over R7 million for programmes that directly address critical challenges, providing vital resources for orphaned girls, safe havens for victims of gender-based violence, support for young cancer patients, and educational opportunities for local students.
“We recognise that systemic change takes time,” explains Daneel Jordan, spokesperson for Nicarela Charity. “But we also believe that we can’t stand idly by while members of our community struggle. Local giving empowers us to take direct action and make a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most.”
The annual Parkview Christmas Market, which takes place from November 22nd-24th at George Hay Park, is the cornerstone of their fundraising efforts. This vibrant community event offers a festive atmosphere filled with artisanal crafts, live music, diverse food stalls, and a dedicated kids’ zone. Visitors can find unique, handcrafted gifts, enjoy performances by local musicians, and indulge in a variety of culinary delights. From a beer tent to an oyster and champagne bar, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Beyond the festive cheer, the market represents a powerful act of community solidarity in the face of inequality. Every purchase, every donation, directly contributes to Nicarela Charity’s programs and empowers them to continue their vital work. “It’s a tangible way for the community to come together, celebrate the spirit of giving, and contribute to building a more equitable society,” says Jordan.

The market runs from Friday, November 22nd (3 pm-10 pm) to Sunday, November 24th (10 am-4 pm). Entry is R50 for adults, R30 for pensioners, and free for children under 12.
