Protect Your Swing Gate: Criminals Are Using It to Gain Entry
Criminals are once again targeting homes with swing gates, exploiting their vulnerabilities to gain entry and commit robberies.
According to Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing & Communications at Fidelity ADT, this method of forced entry has resurfaced, with suspects using two common tactics: ramming the gate with the front of their vehicle or reaching underneath to cut the padlock securing the gate’s hydraulic arms.
“Swing gate hydraulic arms have been flagged as a major weak point,” warns Hattingh. “These need to be reinforced with at least two magnetic or mechanical locks to reduce the risk of forced entry.”
To help residents strengthen their perimeter security, Hattingh recommends the following measures:
- Install an aluminium sheet at the bottom of the gate to prevent criminals from reaching through to access the locking mechanism.
- Consider installing a tamper alarm system like Fidelity SecureGate that will send a signal to the control room to dispatch a vehicle if there are any efforts to tamper with your gate.
- Ensure there are no gaps where prying tools can be inserted. If in doubt, arrange for a professional gate audit through your local security company.
- Keep pedestrian gates padlocked at all times. Use a padlock installed on the inside, as chains are easily cut. Instead of chains, install a secure bracket through which a padlock can be inserted.
