Die Dekonstruksie van Retta Blom; a complicated love story, hits cinemas nationwide in May.

Johannesburg, South Africa, 17 March 2025 – Get ready to experience a cinematic masterpiece that will tug at your heartstrings. Die Dekonstruksie van Retta Blom, a poignant and thought-provoking love story, launches in cinemas nationwide on May 23, 2025.

Directed by Pieter Grobbelaar, this highly anticipated film delves into the complexities of love, relationships, and the human condition. The movie follows the tumultuous journey of Retta Blom, a beautiful woman navigating the intricacies of love, loss, and self-discovery. The film is an adaptation of the much-loved book by Zelda Bezuidenhout who meticulously tells this moving story of the breakdown of trust and self; interspersed with poignant wit of a woman’s journey to understanding and reconstructing herself.

In this coming-of-age story, Retta Blom has the perfect life—–or so it seems. A loving husband, a son, her beloved dog and a dream house in a leafy Johannesburg suburb. When her perfectionist eye spots a tiny crack in the varnish of her flawless life, doubt seeps in. She starts investigating. Perhaps her husband, Tobias, isn’t all he pretends to be. Has he been hiding a dark secret from her all these years? With its stunning cinematography, compelling storyline, and outstanding performances, Die Dekonstruksie van Retta Blompromises to leave audiences spellbound, entertained and inspired.

“We are thrilled to bring this powerful and emotional story to the big screen,” said Pieter Grobbelaar. “Told with a comedic edge, our film explores the complexities of love and relationships in a way that will resonate deeply with audiences. I wanted to push the boundaries, tear up the envelope of what Afrikaans films are. It deals with how our lives deconstruct and how we rebuild from scratch. And where normally a coming-of-age film delves into the first awakening of the sexual being, this film in the ‘re-awakening’…a far more painful process as truth hits hard…and wounds. The nudity, sex, and physical presence of sexuality within these characters’ lives, interested me as a storyteller.”

Produced by The Ergo Company, Die Dekonstruksie van Retta Blom was adapted for screen by celebrated screenwriter, Henrietta Gryffenberg. It boasts a talented cast, comprising the award-winning Antoinette Louw as Retta, Hilda Cronje, Francois Coertze, Christopher van der Westhuizen, Carmen Maarman, Natalia De Rocha, Faith Beukes, David Chevers, Danica Davis, Christelle Van Den Berch, James Borthwick, Kevin Smith, Reem Koussa, Moshine Mametja, Isabella Mostert and Andre Odendaal.

” Just like the classic road movie ‘Thelma and Louise” this film celebrates friendship and is a roadmap on how to escape boredom and the drudgery of life. It promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats through its humour, coupled with curiosity stemming from a mere suitcase. As Die Dekonstruksie van Retta Blom hits our screens in May, we edge everyone to embark on Retta’s beautiful, but thought proving journey with us.” Says Dumi Gumbi, 5 time SAFTA Award winner and producer.
