After careful consideration and an evaluation of the theatrical marketplace, the KAALGAT KARELproducers have taken the painful decision to delay the release of their Afrikaans romantic comedy until 24 September 2021.
The film by Boondogle Films, which was shot in East London, wrapped shooting on the eve of lockdown in March 2020. It was due to be released on Valentine’s weekend 2021.
“This has been a heartbreaking decision”, says producer and writer Paul Egan. “We believe that considering the second wave of the Covid-virus and the current lockdown, combined with the curfew, it is not the right time to be releasing the film theatrically.”
“We are very aware of the terrible circumstances facing so many at the moment and the deep uncertainty going forwards”, says Egan’s co-producer and co-writer, Meg Rickards, who also directed the film. “This has been a particularly difficult decision as we can’t wait to share the film with the rest of South Africa. We are hopeful that by Heritage weekend in September the picture will have significantly improved.”
Both Egan and Rickards would like to give their deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones over these past months and to wish strength to those who are doing battle with the virus, as well as those whose have livelihoods have been impacted.

The film was produced in cooperation with kykNET, the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), the Eastern Cape Provincial Arts and Culture Council (ECPACC), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and also with its brand integration partners, Galito’s, Red Alert and the Hathaway Group of Guesthouses.
