The AU is holding its 25th annual summit at Sandton’s Convention Centre, with leaders such as Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir attending.
Interview magazine recently published a conversation between Jolie and fellow actor, Dohmnall Gleeson, in which she said she would attend.
“Most of June I’m in Europe,” said Jolie. “I’m finished with the movie. I’m doing more of my UN work and doing the African Union Summit and things like that. “
A source close to the United Nations in South Africa said Jolie was invited to South Africa as a special guest of African Union Committee Chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
While Jolie is a Special Envoy, her visit is not a formal United Nations affair. She is said to be in South Africa with another charity working to protect women’s rights in war zones.
“She was coming for the summit,” said the source. “Yes, she’s here for the AU summit.”
