The uShaka Sea World Education centre was abuzz with excitement this morning (Thursday 24th October 2019) as 160 grade seven learners from 13 schools competed with one another for the much coveted 2019 Marine Outreach prize..

The uShaka Sea World Education Outreach Team have been working with these schools, all located within the eThekwini Municipality and uThukela districts for the past eight months.

During the year the outreach staff gave curriculum based interactive marine based lessons to the learners from all the competing schools.  The aim of these lessons was to inspire the learners to learn more about the value of the ocean and how their actions impact the ocean.  The theme this year was litter and focused on how, by doing the right thing and making the right choices, we can all make a positive difference.

After a most memorable morning spent watching and listening the judges had the unenviable task of selecting this years’ winners.

First place went to eKuthuleni Primary School from Inanda.

The learner’s teacher, Miss Buthelezi, was thrilled when the name of her school was called out.  “I am so proud of all the learners, they have worked so hard with so much passion.  From the beginning of the project they brought their own ideas and assisted one another to be the best they could be.  Our school is committed to good environmental practice – we don’t just sing it – we live it. You will never see a piece of paper anywhere at any time on our school premises” said Miss Buthelezi.
