Cape Town, South Africa – 12 February, 2024. APEX, a wholly owned subsidiary of Rubicon Group, today announced the launch of ApexOS, a groundbreaking operating system that provides users with exceptional control and monitoring capabilities for their APEX devices.
This innovative software represents a significant leap forward in energy management technology, positioning APEX as a leader in providing end-to-end technical equipment, service, and software solutions to both commercial and residential clients.
ApexOS enables APEX to design and build traditional energy conversion and storage hardware but with additional layers of cloud-facing functionality. “Crucially, we can remotely manage and control fleets of equipment from our cloud services,” explains Nick Roche, Chief Product Officer at Rubicon. This functionality, that’s secured by VPN connectivity, proves to be useful in various contexts, including Virtual Power Plants and scenarios where fleets of equipment can be orchestrated to solve supply constraints in municipal or gated community settings.
In simple terms, ApexOS represents a fresh integration of hardware and software on field devices, consolidating all necessary features into a single operating system. The advanced features of ApexOS also encompass its control and monitoring capabilities. Roche explains: “With ApexOS cloud functionality, we can remotely coordinate numerous fleet devices to manage energy absorption or injection from/to the grid, utilising a combination of our cloud, device software, and hardware.”
Apart from its technical progress, ApexOS also incorporates client-facing components, such as a monitoring user interface and a communication layer linking ApexOS to cloud services. Remote diagnosis and error resolution are also essential features of the software. “However, ApexOS’ primary functionality goes well beyond that, by enabling fleets of equipment to be arranged into unified solutions to the power crisis or where power trading is employed,” says Roche.
He further explains that understanding the basic features, such as fleet control, Virtual Power Plant participation, offline monitoring of APEX equipment, and secure communications, will enable installers to effectively promote this new technology to projects with these needs. APEX devices equipped with ApexOS also offer a solution to customers facing grid constraints and are in need of cloud services as a solution.
“APEX is proud to bring a real South African energy management solution to the market. We believe that this innovative solution will revolutionise the industry, providing our customers with unprecedented capabilities and solutions to the residential, commercial, and industrial energy marketplace,” stated Roche.
ApexOS will provide customers with incredible control and monitoring power, positioning them for next-generation energy management at any scale. This new technology is available in APEX’s new-generation products, including the SGS solar geyser system and the Edge Device. It will soon be integrated into the Generation 2 MCS microgrid controller and the new i10H Hybrid inverter.
