Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year is the docudrama The Social Network, which follows the launch of Facebook – it’s hard to believe that the platform that is now such an integral part of social media today was only launched 21 years ago. The history of Facebook traces its growth from a college networking site to a global social networking service. It was launched as TheFacebook in 2004 and renamed Facebook in 2005. Initially limited to Harvard students, by 2006 anyone with a valid email address, 13 or older, could access the platform.
The film follows Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg who creates the social networking site that would become known as Facebook. Along the way, he is sued by the twins who claimed he stole their idea and by the co-founder who was later squeezed out of the business. Releasing on 11 April, the film is directed by David Fincher, and stars Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg, together with Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake.
