Arts and culture industry giants set to inspire South Africa’s youth
On 17 September, youth who are looking to build a career or business in the arts and culture industry will be given access to invaluable advice, information, and inspiration from some of the industry’s top young talent, including internationally recognised stylist, Trevor Stuurman and GALXBOY founder, Thatiso Dube.
The YouthX Live event, which will take place at The Station in Durban and be streamed online, forms a part of the second edition of Nedbank’s YouthX movement which aims to provide an exchange platform for the youth to inspire the next step in their early careers or business ventures.
Those joining YouthX Live can also expect performances from Pabi Cooper and Young Stunna.
Attendees will be treated to masterclasses and panel discussions from the YouthX Changemakers in the arts and culture industry. Four Changemakers will share advice with those aspiring to be like them by shedding light on their personal journeys, life learnings, and industry insights.
‘Nedbank created the YouthX movement to help equip the youth with knowledge, resources, and guidance to unlock their potential with the aim of preparing them to be active participants in the economy and to positively contribute to the upliftment of their communities,’ commented Khensani Nobanda, Group Executive for Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Nedbank. ‘By partnering with some of South Africa’s most accomplished Changemakers, we believe we can get the youth one step closer to kick-starting their careers and business ventures,’ Nobanda added.
Every Changemaker participating in YouthX Live represents a different career field and subsector in the arts and culture industry, and include:
· Visual and Literary Arts: Trevor Stuurman, an extremely influential visual arts and fashion stylist who was named one of the Forbes 30 Under 30, and TIME Next Generation Leader in 2021. His work has been showcased and honoured globally.
· Fashion and Beauty: Thatiso Dube, founder of clothing brand GALXBOY – a brand designed for the youth, by the youth.
· Culinary: Mmiso Luphondo, entrepreneur, DJ, and mixologist.
· Tarryn Alberts, an award-winning street dancer who advocates for breaking racial and gender-based stereotypes in the industry.
In addition to the four Changemakers, a financial expert will educate attendees on how to raise capital for a new business – invaluable information for those looking to become an entrepreneur in this field.
‘I am honoured and excited to share my learnings and career experience with South Africa’s youth. If my involvement in Nedbank YouthX can inspire young people to follow their dreams and build a career in the arts, it would be a wonderful personal success and immensely awarding. I’d like to thank Nedbank for including me in this important initiative and hope to see many young faces at the YouthX Live event,’ concluded Trevor Stuurman.
Nedbank’s YouthX Live is open to the public and tickets are available at [Ticketpro]. The event will also be streamed via www.unlocked.me.
