Be colourfully kind at this week’s African Karting Cup
Spectators at this week’s African Karting Cup (AKC), which is taking place at Zwartkops Kart Circuit in Centurion between 15 – 17 February, will not only have the opportunity to see 40 of the finest participants from all over Africa battling it out, but will also be able to lend support to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).
Leillani Geduld, National Manager Corporate Relations and Sporting Events at CANSA says, “We are enthralled to be partnering with AKC at this event, having the opportunity to promote leading a balanced lifestyle which contributes to lowering the cancer risk. Simultaneously we will be engaging with the AKC community, as cancer affects us all. We are excited to host a CANSA Shavathon at the event with our theme this year – ‘Be Colourfully Kind’. It’s our 22nd year launching CANSA Shavathon and what better way to celebrate than for the go-karting community to focus on kindness.”
And that is also a theme which is close to ROK SA’s leading lady managing the event, Cindy Van der Laan. “As far back as I can remember, motorsport has always been a significant part of my life. Both Van Der Laan’s children also share a passion for motorsport, both having competed in Karting.
She first introduced her son to Karting at the tender age of four. At the sight of the kart track, his eyes lit up with excitement and he immediately took to it. Her then 11-year-old daughter, Taya, intrigued by her brother’s enthusiasm, also expressed interest in karting. This marked the beginning of a familial journey into the world of karting.
“As I look towards the future, my vision for karting and motorsport in South Africa is clear. I am committed to growing the sport, fostering new talent, and creating opportunities for more people to become involved. In particular, I am passionate about getting more females involved in motorsport.
“Remember entry is free for spectators to see our OK-N and OK-J competitors in action. Participants are all looking forward to competing in the arrive and drive format on one of the country’s busiest and most modern tracks in the country and they will be supported by partner, Altiven with their DCA Professional Power Tool range, who will be on hand to keep our karts safe and mobile,” Van der Laan concludes.
The African Karting Cup is supported by Motorsport South Africa and the FIA, the governing body for world motor sport.
