The lyrics to Queen Bee Beyoncé Knowles’s new hit song, Drunk on Love, leave a lot to be desired.
[full]They’re full of random references to watermelons and sh*t, gangsters’ wives and riding surfborts (sic) in da tub.
But with her music video she adds a couple of emoji – those little cartoon characters on your smart phone, useful for when you can’t think of anything smart to say – and the literal interpretation gives the song a whole new meaning.
There’s no denying that Knowles is sexy: she struts her stuff in a see-through dress at night on the beach, making love to the camera, dry humping the waves (well, in this case wet humping them) and dripping lust in the official video. But isn’t all this unadulterated sexiness in music videos getting too obvious?
Artist Jesse Hill was probably thinking the same thing when he came up with his 100% emoji take on her song. The kid in me was happy to see the smiling, steaming turd emoji finally getting a starring role and the eggplant deserves an Oscar for its performance as a reference to “rubbing on it, rub-rubbing” on his you-know-what.
The memorable line towards the end of the song, “Slid the panties right to the side”, also gets imaginative treatment.
Now I can’t help seeing those little critters every time I hear the song. They’ve made sense of Knowles’s lyric: “Can’t keep your eyes off my fatty.” If only our court interpreters had emojis at their disposal.[/full]
