Johannesburg, South Africa – Last week, the Black Coffee Foundation hosted an unforgettable black-tie gala dinner in celebration of Black Coffee’s birthday, bringing together friends, family, and industry leaders for an evening of music, philanthropy, and purpose. More than just a birthday celebration, the event marked the introduction of The Black Coffee Music Academy, an initiative set to equip young musicians with the tools, knowledge, and experience to succeed on a global stage.
The Academy will be a world-class institution, providing tertiary-level music education where students can learn about music production, the business of music, the process of creating an album, marketing music and more – ensuring that the next generation of African artists is prepared to take the world successfully.
Held in an elegant setting at LUXX Venue Sandhurst, the evening brought together some of South Africa’s most influential names, including Fikile Mbalula, Major League DJz, Oskido, Anatii, Blxckie, Siyabonga Ngwekazi, former Miss South Africa Dr Tamaryn Green and Somizi. Hosted by Anele Mdoda, guests indulged in a curated three-course meal by Chef Scott; enjoyed performances by Kitchen Mess; opera by Zandile Mzazi; Nduduzo Makhathini at the grand piano; an unforgettable live performance by Bikos Manna and a phenomenal address on the power of excellence and impact by Tshepo Mahloele.
The highlight of the night was an exclusive live auction held by Strauss & Co., featuring one-of-a-kind pieces, including a signature Nelson Makamo artwork, luxury sneakers, fine jewellery, a limited-edition Rolex watch, and more. Through online pledges and in-room bidding, the Black Coffee Foundation exceeded its goal, raising an impressive R3.1 million – funds that will go directly toward laying the foundation for The Black Coffee Music Academy.
Reflecting on the success of the evening, Lungie Maphumulo, CEO of the Black Coffee Foundation, shared her excitement: “We are absolutely thrilled with the generosity shown tonight. Raising R3.1 million means we can take the first steps in physically building the foundation of the Black Coffee Music Academy. This initiative is deeply personal to us because it allows the foundation to enrich the lives of young musicians who dream of becoming the next Black Coffee. We are committed to creating opportunities and shaping futures, and this is just the beginning. We are incredibly proud of the work the Black Coffee Foundation continues to do in communities across the country. Tonight was a testament to the power of collaboration, passion, and purpose. We are beyond excited to begin building the Academy and to continue making a lasting difference in the lives of young artists.”
Sharing stories while addressing all in attendance, Black Coffee expressed his gratitude, “This initiative has been a dream of mine for a long time, and it’s truly incredible to see it finally come to life – starting with this very special evening, surrounded by people who believe in the power of music education. I’ve always been committed to leaving the world a better place, and this Academy is part of that vision. It’s about building an impactful legacy that will ensure South African and African music continues to take on the global stage. Education is the foundation of growth, and by investing in young minds, we are securing the future of our music and culture. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate my birthday.”
Adding to the magic of the night, attendees joined in a heartfelt rendition of “Happy Birthday” for Black Coffee, celebrating his legacy and his commitment to uplifting communities in need and shaping the future of African music.
The success of the evening would not have been possible without the incredible support of our partners, including Hollywood Foundation, Mercedes Benz, Hennessy, and many others, who helped bring this vision to life. Thank you to all who donated items for the auction, and to POC for curating a stellar evening filled with glamour, luxury and purpose. The R3.1 million raised last night allows the foundation to take one step closer to building The Black Coffee Music Academy – an institution that will nurture talent, create opportunities, and redefine African music on a global scale.
