BUSHMAN’S NEK SUCCUMBS TO DEVASTATING VELD FIRE

KwaZulu-Natal, 9 August 2024 – Bushman’s Nek, one of First Group Hotel and Resort’s cherished properties in the Southern Drakensberg, was tragically destroyed by a veld fire in the early hours of 9 August 2024. According to Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group, the fire broke out at approximately 1:00am and quickly spread through the entire property, causing extensive damage.

Lamont says that the loss of Bushman’s Nek is a devastating blow. “This resort was more than just a destination; it was a place where lasting, magical memories were made, where laughter filled the air, and where guests could experience the tranquillity of nature.”

He adds that the safety of all guests and staff was their immediate priority during the crisis, and while they are thankful to report that there were no injuries, people were scared and their holidays were disrupted. “We would like to sincerely apologise to all our guests who were affected by this tragic event. The safety and wellbeing of our guests have always been, and will continue to be, our top priority.”

Bushman’s Nek was a retreat beloved by many, and the loss is deeply felt. Despite the destruction, First Group is committed to the future, with plans already being discussed to rebuild the resort.

“Bushman’s Nek was not just a resort; it was a sanctuary for many. As we come to terms with this loss, First Group remains dedicated to rising from these ashes, stronger and more resilient,” Lamont stated.

First Group would also like to extend its deepest gratitude to the emergency services for their swift response and to the guests and staff for their patience and understanding during this difficult time. The company will continue to provide updates as the recovery and rebuilding process begins.
