Calling all aspiring songwriters, your big break might be just a few days away with ATKV-Crescendo
Anyone with a heart filled with lyrics and a notebook filled with tunes can now apply for the Crescendo program and follow in the musical footsteps of the South African singing superstars, Anneli van Rooyen and Jodi Jantjies, by joining the ATKV-Crescendo family.
To audition for a spot in this prestigious annual musical development program all you need is to submit a song by Monday, January 31, 2022 and you could very well become the next music sensation in Mzansi.
Download and complete an entry form from the ATKV website, and send by email to [email protected] together with proof of payment and an MP3 or voice note recording of your song. Then look out for your invite to one of four audition events presented in association with Expression Session.
Successful finalists will be announced on March 1, 2022, and will be invited to a four-day training program. The aim of this program is to impart the necessary knowledge and expertise to finalists, strengthening their skills and equipping them to write up to as many as 60 new songs.
After the mentoring program, the finalists are selected for the finals of ATKV-Crescendo which includes a final workshop and concludes with a launch concert. The launch concert offers finalists the opportunity to also share the stage with the mentors and during the week of the workshop, they rehearse with the Crescendo orchestra.
Part of the training offered is entrepreneurship in the arts and this course, which aims to empower artists as entrepreneurs and to ensure that they can be self-sustaining, is presented by NWU PUK Artema.
The project places a tremendous amount of focus on human development, and the core of training and development is grounded in two characteristics; character and integrity
The team of mentors is selected from a diverse pool of musicians and artists, thus ensuring that each finalist is served with as much expertise, knowledge as well as relevant experience that each Mentor can offer from their reality and frame of reference
According to AKTV-Crescendo Project Organizer, Morne van Staden, this is not a talent competition – it’s a development program aimed at equipping songwriters with expertise.
“The project also focuses on discovering new sounds in Afrikaans and all participants are encouraged to write and sing in their own dialect. Through this method, the project ensures that there is a constant flow of new talent, new songs and new sounds to the Afrikaans music industry.”
