JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – February 2025: Canon, a global provider of imaging and printing technologies and services, has been honoured for its sustainability journey with a Gold rating from leading sustainability intelligence firm, EcoVadis.
The rating places Canon within the top 5% of companies assessed globally with an overall score in the 98th percentile, signifying the brand’s commitment to transforming operations and manufacturing processes to help build a greener and more sustainable future.

“Sustainability has long been a key priority for us as we look to align our strategy with the need for more environmentally friendly and people-centric business practices. At the same time, we have a responsibility to our partners and customers to help them meet their sustainability goals, and we accomplish this by working to reduce our environmental impact, support local communities, and engage in purposeful partnerships and programmes. We are incredibly proud of achieving this rating and are grateful to EcoVadis for recognising our efforts,” said Peter Mtsweni, Sustainability and Product Safety Manager at Canon South Africa.

A leading sustainability intelligence platform for enterprises and supply chains worldwide, EcoVadis helps guide companies’ sustainability performance, compliance, and improvement using detailed insights and a comprehensive assessment methodology built on international sustainability standards. EcoVadis’s Sustainability Scorecard illustrates performance across 21 indicators in four themes, covering the environment, ethics, labour and human rights, and sustainable procurement.
The EcoVadis score reflects the quality of a company’s sustainability journey and recognises those that have completed the assessment process and who uphold a management system with sustainability-centred criteria. Medals are awarded based on the percentile rank of a company which compares its performance with all rated companies over the previous 12 months.
As part of its commitment to sustainability, Canon aims to achieve carbon net zero emissions by 2050 in accordance with the Paris Agreement, a goal that requires consistent action across the entire business. Canon has also set near-term goals for 2030 that have been submitted to SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative), with the overall ambition to become a circular business through innovative manufacturing, product design, and material recycling.
“Sustainability requires a holistic approach that encompasses how we conduct business as well as how we engage with customers and communities at large. It’s that approach that enables us to maximise our impact and yield results that help make the world a better place,” Peter Mtsweni concluded.
