Tips on becoming the Master of the Braai
Marking the braai season this year, BIC, a world leader in stationery, lighters, and shavers is one of the sponsoring partners of Season 7 of the Ultimate Braai Master. The show, hosted by Justin Bonello, will launch on September 25, and will follow contestants on their journey to showcase their best braai skills. Contestants will be judged by Pete Goffe-Wood and Brand Ambassador for BIC Lighters and Firelighters, Chef Benny Masekwameng.
This upcoming season will be particularly exciting as there is a dynamic group of contestants who range from home cooks to trained chefs, who will be put through their paces in some of the most beautiful locations around Qgeberha and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. This season’s braai motto is ”rain, wind or shine – we braai’, which will ultimately test their determination to stay in the competition.
Commenting on the occasion, Brand Manager Lighters – South & Central Africa, Karen Moodley said: “As inventors and manufacturers of the world’s safest lighters, we are excited to be partnering with the Ultimate Braai Master to get the fire started on Season 7 and wish all the contestants well.”
Commenting on the competition, Brand Ambassador for BIC Lighters and Firelighters, Chef Benny, said: “As a judge on the Ultimate Braai Master, I am looking forward to the delicious dishes and unique recipes that will result from the competition this year. Similar to every year, the judges will be looking for the team that can stand the test of time and deliver flavorful dishes despite the circumstance.”
Sharing his advice based on insights from previous challenges, Chef Benny added: “It’s imperative to carefully listen to the briefs on the show as well as plan ahead and use the tools available. It is also crucial to take note of the questions that the judges ask when visiting the contestants’ stations, as those often serve as hints.”
Chef Benny also shared some tips for making and hosting the perfect Braai:
- The most important step to a perfect Braai is planning and factoring timings of what you’re cooking to manage the fire accordingly.
- The choice of sides is key. From braaibroodjies to roosterkoek, mielie pap to a potato bake – the perfect Braai is always accompanied by delicious sides.
- When cooking outdoors, fire safety is of the utmost importance. This is especially true in places which are windy and there’s a lot of dry grass and branches lying around. Be certain that the fire is fully extinguished when you are done with braaing/cooking.
- Some of the favorite foods to Braai include T-bone steak, pork rashers (thick cut), lemon herb and garlic lamb ribs, and whole fish. For vegans, dressing vegetables and potatoes in balsamic vinegar and putting them on the Braai is always a winner.
- For those who have a sweet tooth, ending the meal with cinnamon and sugar seasoned nectarines on the braai served with caramel ice cream and toasted pecan nuts, is a must.
The Ultimate Braai Master will air on etv (Dstv channel 194) every Saturday, from 25 September 2021 through to 18 December 2021.
