Human beings have an innate affinity for nature and it’s vast allurement, whether it be the serenity and freedom it imbues on one’s soul or the captivating scenery that tugs at the deepest parts of our hearts; we find ourselves following trails that were carved out by those that ventured before us, to gaze at Gods ingenuity.
Hiking Trotters are a bunch of adventure hunters that have chiseled out a few trails of their own and made a mark on this planet for others to follow.
We chat with them about their hikes and hear more regarding their escapades.
Who started Hiking Trotters?
Hiking Trotters was founded by Kabelo Ndzondi and later joined by Kgomotso Segole.
What was the motivation behind forming this group?
You know when you plan a trip, it starts with 10 eager people then dwindles down to 3 nearer to the date. That is what was happening to me when I planned Hikes with people. I then decided to post on Facebook to gauge if there would be an interest for a Woman’s day hike, the response was overwhelming – The rest is history as they say.
How often do the hikes take place?
We have monthly hikes in and around Johannesburg and Multiday hikes out of the province and country.
What are your favorite hiking trails thus far?
We have 3 favorite hike trails
- You can never list a “favorite” without mentioning the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. We hiked Thaba Li Mele Mountain which isn’t a trail for the faint-hearted. We also enjoy the trail down Maletsunyane Falls, the highest single drop fall in Africa also situated Lesotho.
- Second, to Lesotho is, of course, one of the 7natural wonders in the world – Table Mountain accompanied by its astounding views.
- The third favorite trail is Mpumalanga’s Blyde River Canyon Hike. This is where you’d find the most captivating landscapes the world is yet to see.
Who can join Hiking Trotters?
Hiking trotters is for those that love living an active outdoor lifestyle with great company and it’s especially for people who have friends that like canceling on them last minute. LOL. We also make sure that you have a comfortable and memorable experience by providing a cook and someone to take care of your camping needs.
What advice do you have for anyone that would like to start hiking?
In order to enjoy hiking you need to maintain an active lifestyle, it does not have to be anything hectic. It can be as basic as taking regular walks around your block. When you advance to Multiday Hikes you will need a lot of stamina to continue on the trails – which will then require strength exercises.
In terms of equipment to get you started – there are two basic items you need and that is a hiking stick and hiking shoes. The rest of the gear is basic like water bottle, backpack etc.
What Hiking trails do you have that are coming up?
Our Hiking trails for 2020 are as follows:
Clarens – Free State; Drakensburg – Kwazulu Natal; Chiang Mai – Thailand; Magoebaskloof – Limpopo
