Temmy, a fun loving creative writer, is a graduate of Lead City University. She simply loves life, others and God. Aside writing, she enjoys counselling and encouraging others.‎

It is common for people to disconnect, detach, or numb out feelings in an attempt to protect themselves. While this may offer temporary relief from pain, it is seldom a long-term solution to dealing with life’s challenges. In her new single, RAIN, Christi explores being emotionally numb yet desperate to feel.

The song was written by the artist during a difficult time in her life. “I struggle with depression and at one point I felt dead emotionally. I wasn’t happy, sad, or anything in between. I was simply numb. RAIN came from a place of desperately wanting to feel, and to release the pain.”

Like her debut single Fall ApartRAIN was inspired by personal experience. “The song offers a glimpse of me at my worst. It was simultaneously a cry for help and an expression of hope that things will get better,” she says. “It made me realise that while experiencing our emotions can be difficult and overwhelming, it is vital that we work through them instead of disconnecting from them. Writing RAIN helped lift me out of a dark place, and I hope that it will do the same for others.”

Although it touches on a serious and sensitive topic, the song’s message is delivered in a light-hearted way. As the young singer-songwriter has a soft spot for 80s music, the single boasts a fun, 80s pop-inspired sound.

Christi believes that the song will resonate with listeners as emotions are universal, and nobody is spared from pain. “Mental health is close to my heart and this song comes from a very vulnerable place, but I believe that many people will be able to relate. When experiencing pain, we often feel isolated. I want people to know that they are not alone, and that often the only thing they can do to free themselves, is to truly feel.”

A captivating music video of this emotional song has also just been released.

Inspired by the video for River by Miley Cyrus, Christi worked with director Gerduan Kemp to bring her vision for the video to life. “I wanted something simple yet fun, and Gerduan not only met my expectations, but completely surpassed it!”

The video was filmed at Sower Studios, which gave the creative duo a blank canvas. They played with angles, lights, and body movements, which were emphasised by water projections, to create a fun yet emotional feel. “My performance in the video embodies the emotions behind the lyrics, with the lights and water building on the feeling of the song,” explains the singer. “We really tried to capture the essence of the track and every emotion behind it.”

For Christi, creating this music video has been an incredible experience. “I felt so free expressing my music with my body, and I am very proud of the result of our efforts. The video honestly portrays who I am and what I feel, and truly captures a part of me. I think that makes it quite unique.”

Christi’s debut single was released last year and was very well received. “Fall Apart got a lot of attention, and it was an honour to be able to share the story behind the song with the listeners of various radio stations. It has been quite an exciting journey,” she says.

The 23-year-old has wanted to be a performer for as long as she can remember, a passion sparked by her father, who was a DJ. She currently lives in Potchefstroom and is devoting all her time to her music career.

A relative newcomer to the industry, Christi says she has already learned so much. “We tend to want to blend in, but it is our uniqueness which sets us apart. It has been so liberating to explore who I am as a person and an artist, and to have the support of some amazing people on my road of self-discovery,” she says. “Also, work is so much better when you’re passionate about it. I feel privileged to spend all my time doing what I love.”

The up-and-coming young artist’s plans for 2023 include releasing her debut album towards the end of the year, writing new music, and travelling to Israel and France.

RAIN is set to follow in the footsteps of this versatile young singer-songwriter’s successful debut single.
