CURBON & Twyg partner in 4th annual Sustainable Fashion Awards as the industry grapples with its contribution to carbon emissions

As part of its drive to help companies work towards a net zero emissions future CURBON, is proud to announce its partnership with Twyg, South Africa’s leading sustainable fashion magazine in the fourth edition of Twyg’s Sustainable Fashion Awards taking place on 17th November, 2022.

While the fashion industry and broader clothing and textile manufacturing sector might not be synonymous with a significant contribution to carbon emissions, it is in fact one of the highest emitters, contributing approximately ten per cent of global annual emissions through its supply chain. Fibre and fabric production processes generate a high level of greenhouse gasses, add in transport and logistics, distribution and retail and it’s clear why there are global calls for industry to urgently re-evaluate its business models and address climate change concerns.

“While working on emission reductions through the manufacturing cycle is the job of fashion houses and their suppliers, we each have an individual responsibility to consider our role in contributing to the problem. Consumer demand for new clothes has never been higher and so it is not only the manufacturing process that is to blame for environmental damage – the sheer volume of clothing items that is generated (an estimated one hundred billion per annum) creates its own issues. What unsold stock isn’t incinerated using fossil fuels and thereby generating health threatening emissions, finds its way to landfill sites across the globe. Finding ways to mitigate the damage we are all causing to the planet by buying apparel, shoes, bags and accessories is an imperative,” explains Steffen Burrows, Co-founder and Director of CURBON.

CURBON’s work in this regard, in particular with e-commerce sites, calculates the climate cost of online purchases and using verified carbon credits to eliminate the ecological impact, is helping cultivate a conscious consumer culture.

Says Jackie May, Founder & Editor of Twyg, “There is an obvious ideological fit between CURBON and Twyg. We are passionate about bringing about meaningful climate change. It is unlikely we will ever reverse the upward trend of consumerism, but what we can do is instil a consciousness in consumers around making their own individual contribution to reducing carbon emissions. We are delighted that CURBON has come on board to partner Twyg in the 2022 Sustainable Fashion Awards and look forward to making a meaningful contribution to climate change awareness together with them.”

“Our contribution to and support of Twyg’s awards is an acknowledgement of the authenticity with which they approach climate change and their efforts to create awareness around the fashion industry’s unacceptably high contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Their work and ours in this regard align completely and so the partnership makes business sense for CURBON,” notes Burrows.

The fourth edition of the Sustainable Fashion Awards celebrates designers who use best practices to help change people’s approach to fashion. It includes categories for students and accessory manufacturing, and artisanal crafts in addition to a trans-seasonal award for designers that transcend specific fashion trends as well as awards acknowledging the work of Cut, Make and Trim (CMT) facilities and mills.

Adds Burrows, “In addition to our financial support of the Sustainable Fashion Awards, CURBON will be contributing content to Twyg’s community about the impact of fashion from an emissions perspective. CURBON is committed to making climate action cost-effective, by helping companies – and their consumers – understand, manage and reduce their carbon impact and the profile of Twyg’s awards will assist in this regard.”
