“It’s exciting, it’s scary… it’s been a long time coming. These are my words, my heart, my past and future journey. These are poems, these are stories, these are facts and fiction, it’s laughter, it’s tears, it’s too little and too much. I have so much to give, so much to share,” says singer-songwriter Deidré Barnard about her first EP, GENOEG GEWEES, which is now available online.
This release, featuring four songs written by the artist herself, is named after her favourite track on the album and emphasizes the message and theme that each of us were created good enough and have people who love and appreciate us for who we are.
According to the Capetonian, she began dreaming about and building the content for the EP back in 2020, and she believes it will resonate with a wide audience, especially with the youngsters.
“Although the overarching genre is pop, it’s not pop like you know it,” she explains. “Because I wrote each of the songs myself, I think listeners can definitely expect a more personal experience.”
About BO AAN MY LYS, her latest single produced by Robin Kielly, she says: “This song plays with the idea that something is a priority or the very first thing you think about in the morning. It tells a story of a holiday romance that unfolds during a December in Hartenbos/ Mossel Bay. A place where many of us have found and lost love, and every time you return, it reminds you of a specific person and how sorry you are that things didn’t work out between the two of you.”
Deidré was born and raised in the Strand and has been singing for as long as she can remember.
Since entering the music industry in 2018, she has experienced numerous highlights, including a record deal with Inhoud Huis Musiek and roles in the popular musicals: Die Gelofte and Die Kaplyn.
She shares that her involvement in the latter production brought her closer to her own father.
“I had the pleasure of having meaningful conversations with him during and after the production about his experiences during the border war. I also feel a lot closer to my dad in a way and feel like I know him better because he was almost the same age as me when we did the production, when he fought on the border.”
Furthermore, she is a music teacher, offering singing, basic guitar, ukulele, and piano lessons to elementary school children and individuals of all ages.
In addition to releasing a couple of new songs, the singer has many exciting plans for 2024, but cannot reveal too much about them at this stage.
The music industry has taught her to be patient over the past few years, as everything happens in due time, and she is very grateful for each opportunity she has to live out her music dream.
“Don’t try to make your time His time. Put the Lord in control of everything. He will pick you up from where you are, place you where you need to be, and support you every step of the way,” she concludes.
