Capetonian singer-songwriter, aboynamedblu, has released his latest single, ‘sierra’, off a seven-track EP that is set to grace the music scene next month. A Capetonian artist with the innate ability to blend various genres seamlessly, aboynamedblu is a talent as unique as his stage name. With music that can be described as a ‘genuine extension’ of his personality, he allows audiences to dive into a piece of his mind as each track reflects who he is and what he resonates with.

‘sierra’ is no different – in fact, the track, although coated with an indie-pop sound is a single with a deeply emotional backstory. “It’s about losing a best friend and trying to speak to them even though you know they’re no longer here. It was written for friends and loved ones that I’ve lost along the way,” he explains. “I had just moved out of Cape Town and was living in a small cottage on a farm and that’s where I wrote this song; being outside of the city alone allowed me to tap into all of these feelings and recall parts of my life that you don’t think of when you’re always on the move.”.

Every artist’s journey in the music industry is different. Some happen upon it by chance, while others follow their passion from the beginning, and although aboynamedblu has found himself headed in different directions at various points in his life, it’s always brought him back to music. “This is what feels most natural to me and I’ve decided to run with it,” he shares. A decision that has been met with great reward as his latest project has been supported by many note-worthy playlists – including Today’s Indie Rock, and Fresh Finds Indie on Spotify as well as ALT CTRL and Mzansi Indie on Apple Music. He has also been announced as one ofApple Music’s Up Next artist in South Africa.Seeing the continued support of his music is what keeps him motivated. “To know that people are connecting and resonating with the music makes me want to write and share more.”. In an industry that is run by numbers – how many streams you’re getting, how many playlist adds, how many followers you have – it’s easy to get caught up in that when measuring success, and although that is something that aboynamedblu admits is difficult at times, his focus is on being “the most honest writer I can be, because that’s the only thing in my control.”
