DON’T LET YOUR HOLIDAY PLANS TAKE A VACATION

Must read

The end of the year is here, and many of us find ourselves going to “Romain-here”, while others are off exploring exciting destinations. If you’re feeling the pangs of holiday envy, don’t despair! There’s still time to make the most of the holiday season while starting to set the stage for your getaway in 2025.

Onwaba Gonyora, Director at Brahman Hills, a highly sought-after luxury hotel and spa in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands says, “We’ve all been there – struggling to align leave schedules with your partner, juggling unpredictable family commitments, or simply postponing holiday plans until it’s too late and there is no suitable accommodation in or around your chosen location.”

But don’t let this year’s missed opportunity dampen your spirits. Instead, Gonyora suggests two ways to help cure FOMO: making the most of local adventures now while smart planning your future vacation.

1. Discover Hidden Gems Right on Your Doorstep
Many of us dream of far-off destinations but when was the last time you truly explored your own backyard? You don’t need to travel far to enjoy a fun escape. Each of South Africa’s provinces offers numerous day-trip opportunities, each with unique attractions waiting to be explored.

•  Countryside Charm: South Africa’s countryside brims with scenic routes and charming stops that showcase South Africa’s beauty. In KwaZulu-Natal, the Midlands Meander, just an hour from Durban, delights with artisan shops, markets, farm-to-table dining and Brahman Hills’ spectacular, award-winning gardens.

•  Urban Adventures: Cities and most towns nationwide come alive during the festive season with holiday markets, light displays, and special events. Check your local community newspaper or social media for upcoming festivities.

• Dam Good Days Out: Pack a picnic or braai meat and head for a dam closest to your area like the Vaal Dam bordering Gauteng and the Free State,  Hartebeespoort Dam in the North West or the Gariep Dam separating the Eastern Cape and Free State. They all offer day visitor facilities where you can throw in a line to fish or indulge in various water sports.

• Day Pass Paradise: Many resorts offer day visitor packages that give you access to their facilities without overnight costs. Enjoy pools, restaurants, and other activities while getting a taste of vacation life.

2. Strategic Planning for 2025
Make next year’s holiday dreams a reality by starting now. Decide on a location and dates and apply for leave early in the new year.
•    Lock in Early-Bird Rates: Accommodations in popular destinations like the Kruger National Park, Cape Town, and the KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape coastline often release their best rates 9-12 months in advance.

•    Smart Booking Strategy:
o    Book during off-peak seasons for better rates if you don’t have school-going children
o    Look for package deals that include activities
o    Take advantage of payment plans that let you spread costs over several months

•    Timing is Everything: School holidays and peak seasons book up fastest. The most sought-after accommodations for December often fill up by March, especially for prime locations and larger family units.

“So, whether you’re making the most of local treasures this year or planning ahead for 2025, remember that great holiday memories don’t always require long-distance travel or luxury resorts,” notes Gonyora. “Either way though, you’re taking control of your holiday happiness instead of letting FOMO take the wheel. Besides, sometimes the best adventures are found just around the corner, and the sweetest vacations are those planned with care and anticipation,” she concludes.
