50 and thrifty – Saving more means sharing more
Game is celebrating its 50th birthday and to mark the occasion Game promises to delight and surprise customers with exciting activities, deals and discounts to look forward to in the coming weeks.
“Game was founded in 1970 with thrifty consumers in mind. While the retail landscape and consumer trends have evolved over the decades, our customers have remained thrifty in their spending habits. Keeping this in mind, our thrifty 50th birthday campaign is aimed at celebrating our loyal consumers, who have been the reason for our success since the beginning, and bringing them the unbeatable deals they have come to expect from Game over the years – making it just as easy for them to be thrifty in 2020 as it was in 1970,” explains Katherine Madley, Marketing and Customer Director at Game.
In celebration, Game will be running exciting in-store promotions throughout the month of June, including giving away R1-million in vouchers to consumers spending R250 or more. Game will be featured on Metro FM and Expresso and even has a trolley dash planned! Additionally, Game is partnering with some of South Africa’s most-loved social influencers to create exciting content and further opportunities for Game customers to win, including Lebogang Tlokana, Karen Kelly, Nangi Noruka and Sibu Mpanza.
While the consumer and retail landscapes have certainly evolved over the last 50 years, there are a number of things consumers can do to remain thrifty in 2020, and Game has mapped out their top tips.

Your thrifty game plan made easy:
For your kitchen:
Plan your meals ahead of time so that you have a shopping list prepared when going shopping. Keep a list on the fridge or somewhere you will see it and add to it as required. The main rule is – if it isn’t on the list – don’t buy it! Another tip is to opt for produce that is in season as this is generally better priced. It goes without saying, be on the lookout for sales on non-perishables and stock up when you find the best deal. Also, lookout for our very reasonably priced containers perfect for storing and freezing leftovers. Waste not, want not.
In the home: Flat-pack furniture, and furniture with a dual purpose such as a sleeper couch, is a great way to keep your home looking stylish, save you money and not tie you down to a single trend for too long. Make sure you are buying energy efficient appliances which will save you water and electricity over the long term – a typical refrigerator manufactured in 1993 uses twice as much energy as a newer model you would purchase today. Eco-friendly appliances have been proven to create an energy saving of between 20% and 50% when compared to traditional appliances, depending on the brand and type of appliance.
Embrace your inner DIY: These days you don’t need to know the difference between a spanner and a wrench because DIY has become so simple and easy with a number of resources available. From simple upcycling to complete home renovations, there is a DIY project for everyone. You really can do it yourself with online videos explaining just about anything that needs done in the home; and with all the tools available at Game at unbeatable prices, you don’t have any excuse.
Make the most of online: There is no doubt that technology and the rise of e-commerce have made it even easier to be a thrifty consumer today. Gone are the days where people spent hours cutting out coupons for discounts, we now receive them through smart devices as QR or coupon codes. Be sure to sign up to newsletters, join loyalty programmes and compare prices online to make sure you are getting the thriftiest deals from your chosen retailers. Plus, you know that Game has a price beat promise since it opened its doors in 1970, if you can find exactly the same item for less, we will not only beat the price, but we will also drop it further by 10% on the difference. Now that’s a win-win situation!
Parenting: While on the subject of planning and budgets, playing financial games with your children, like Monopoly, is a great way to get them thinking about spending and saving money. Keep an eye out for sales on things like school uniforms, shoes and stationery to make sure the back to school items are sorted. We also know that kids love to experiment, especially when trying out new sports and activities.
Game has you covered when it comes to sports equipment for every age, from the try out range right through to the advanced range. Kiddie parties and special birthdays should be a memorable and joyful occasion, keeping social distancing in mind off course. At Game you can purchase everything you need to host the ultimate party, plus a variety of gifts at affordable prices, saving you time and money.
“Our customers have always been consumers who know how to save. Our thrifty 50th birthday celebration is aimed at respecting their commitment to finding the best deals and ensuring that the savvy spending spirit continues way beyond 2020,” concludes Madley.
