GivenGain challenges Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg participants to #RideForAPurpose
GivenGain, a global fundraising platform for charity, founded by two South Africans, has once again joined forces with the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg as its official charity fundraising partner. Since the start of this partnership in 2013, the GivenGain platform has enabled more than 750 fundraising cyclists raise an astounding R7.7 million from over 7000 donors in support of no fewer than 172 charities. This year, GivenGain and 947 Ride Joburg, are aiming for even more.
The race takes place on Sunday, 17th November 2024. The world’s second largest timed cycle race, it sees an average of 20 000 – 30 000 participants each year. Says Jannie Smith, Regional Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at GivenGain, “This wonderful cycling event provides all of the cyclists with the opportunity to #RideForAPurpose. It adds an extra layer of motivation to their training and preparation, and the actual race day itself, by leveraging this epic event to raise funds for a cause or charity close to their hearts.”
Some examples of participants who have already made this commitment include the Apocalypse Cows – a large group of riders aiming to raise at least R1 Million in support of the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC). Another contingent of cyclists will be riding in support of Transplant Education for Living Legacies (TELL), an organisation dedicated to increasing awareness of organ donation and its ability to save lives, while a different group has committed to support Retina South Africa, supporting children and adults living with vision loss.
It is also a great opportunity for companies to get involved and to raise funds together as a way of building team spirit and doing good. One such example is the Balwin Property Group whose riders are raising funds in support of The Balwin Foundation – a charity dedicated to empowering youth through education and community development projects.
Says Fritz Pienaar, race director of the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg, “Our partnership with GivenGain elevates our event beyond that of a cycling race only. It provides all riders with an easy and secure way to raise funds for worthwhile causes, helping us to truly live our #RideForAPurpose mission.”
GivenGain is the global leader in cloud-based activism for good, joining forces with numerous mass-participation and endurance events. “We mobilise fundraising for mass-participation events as well as empower individuals and communities to make an impact,” says Smith. “We are also a non-profit. Driven by purpose, not profit, all fees are reinvested into building new tools to continue making giving easier for all.”
“Any rider taking part in the race, not only those with a charity entry, can set up a fundraising project,” continues Smith. “It takes less than three minutes, with easy sharing options directly from their fundraising page to help reach more donors.” Fundraisers also receive immediate notifications when a donation is made, with new functionality allowing each donor to be individually thanked.
“For those riders who are too busy prepping for the big event to set up their own fundraising page, but are still keen to support their favourite charity, GivenGain has got you covered,” adds Smith. “Simply email fundraising@givengain.com and we’ll help you get started.”
