Has the World Run out of Tequila?

Has the World Run Out Of Tequila?

So… there is a global shortage of your favourite party drink, now what? Fear not, we have some answers.

It seems dry January is rolling on through all the way to April (and potentially beyond) this year due to a global shortage of Tequila. The reason for the shortage is simple and complicated all at the same time.

In the most basic terms: True Mexican Tequila is produced from the distilled sap of the Agave plant and there are almost none left. This unique cactus-like plant has spiky leaves and spines and the fruit looks almost like a massive pineapple. Now, there are over 130 known species of agave in Mexico, but only the blue agave (agave azul) is allowed for use in tequila production. It takes about eight years for an agave plant to reach a mature stage at which it can be harvested. There has been a huge surge in tequila sales since 2020 resulting in a production increase which in turn has led to this mass shortage of agave.

Here is the good news: Skinny M is the only Hard Seltzer with real tequila in the country, and has a sustainable level of stock for the foreseeable future.  The ‘M’ in Skinny M stands for Mexico, the birthplace of the Blue Agave. The Hard Seltzer is a crisp mix of tequila, lime, and soda with only 79 calories. While many people perceive Tequila as the ultimate party starter, a shot can take you from zero to a hundred in no time, it is actually a far more noble spirit and deserves to be sipped and enjoyed as you would any other premium drink. It comes in a range of flavours and can be layered with almonds, toffee, coffee, cacao, and raisins. And very much like single malt whiskies, tequilas vary in age and according to where they are made.

Sure, there is nothing wrong with taking your tequila with a lime slice and some salt, but during these times of need shake things up a little and broaden our Tequila horizons.

The best part about Skinny M is that it has zero artificial sugars added and is naturally low in calories, it is free from artificial flavourings and colourants making it the premium drink of choice. In addition, some research suggests that the sugars found in the agave can help with improving your digestive system, which ultimately helps with weight loss. Enjoy it ice cold straight out of the can or pour over ice in a tall glass and garnish with lemon and rosemary.
