“IMAX film brings images to life. From resolution and colour to sharpness and overall quality, there is nothing compared to using IMAX film cameras. The IMAX film format is the Gold Standard of motion picture photography.” – -Christopher Nolan, director
22 February 2024 – Following its record 13 Oscar nominations and multiple awards at the recent Emmys and BAFTAs, Ster-Kinekor is re-releasing the epic Oppenheimer film in its IMAX and Cine Prestige cinemas and at select 2D cinemas nationally, for one week only, from Friday 23 February. Watching this blockbuster movie with the full immersive IMAX experience on the country’s biggest cinema screens is the only way to do justice to the true-life drama that unfolds.
All nine of Ster-Kinekor’s IMAX sites are fitted with a generator, so you can leave your loadshedding problems at home, and enjoy an uninterrupted and immersive cinema experience on the biggest screens at The Grove in Tshwane; Cradlestone, Eastgate and Mall of Africa in Johannesburg; Gateway in KZN; Baywest in Gqeberha (PE); and at Capegate, Tygervalley and V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
Oppenheimer tells the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb. The film features a celebrated cast of stars including Cillian Murphy in the title role, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck and Rami Malek. Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is an IMAX®-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.
Christopher Nolan designed Oppenheimer with IMAX in mind – capturing the film with IMAX cameras, amongst the highest-resolution film cameras in the world and refining the film throughout post-production in an IMAX cinema to further optimise how audiences experience the film in IMAX. He uniquely and brilliantly uses technology to support the story in all of his films – never taking the opposite approach.
The epic drama was shot using a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film – including, for the first time, sections in IMAX black & white analogue photography to enhance the storytelling experience. It was the only feature film shot with IMAX film cameras to be released in 2023.
Only in IMAX cinemas will these sequences expand vertically to fill the entire screen – providing audiences with even greater scope and breathtaking image quality. Everything from the movie itself to the cinema design, projection and sound has been customised and enhanced to make cinema goers feel as if they are part of the action.
Don’t miss the opportunity to watch this award-winning film in the best possible format – on the larger-than-life IMAX screens, as Oppenheimer re-releases on Friday, 23 February.
