Former Kaizer Chiefs captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune looks set to rejoin the club.
This is after Khune, together with midfielder Mandla Masango, met with Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung on Friday at the club’s Naturena Village training ground in an attempt to reach a deal that would see the club retain the two players.
Khune, Masango and defender Tefu Mashamaite’s contract renewal negotiations with the club collapsed just before the end of last season, due to their alleged steep financial demands and all three are without contracts with the new season set to get underway.
While Chiefs are said to have reconsidered their position, the club will meet Masango and Khune tomorrow to conclude talks and lay down the law. Amakhosi had earlier accused Khune with holding the club to ransom, but Motaung was quoted yesterday as saying: “We listened to his (Khune’s) presentation and that’s where it ended.
“There are a lot of dynamics we need to address, such as how the failed negotiations were handled, issues of respect, protocol and understanding their own responsibility to themselves.
“The bottom line is that all actions have repercussions – it’s just a question of dealing with a matter properly so that this does not occur in future with any other player.”
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane said Khune, who has continuously been linked with a move to Downs, should contemplate a salary cut should he choose to join the Brazilians, while Chippa United made an audacious failed bid to have the Bafana Bafana keeper join the Port Elizabeth club.
There has been reported interest from overseas clubs for Khune, but the shot-stopper is waiting to hear from the Motaungs in no uncertain terms whether or not he will be welcomed back to the club.
A number of local clubs have approached Masango for his services and he has turned them down – most recently an offer from Bidvest Wits.
