Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels Initiative Helps 2-Year-Old Auryn Hear Her Parents’ Voices for the First Time

Johannesburg, 7 November 2024 | Jacaranda FM Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels initiative is making life-changing strides for 2-year-old Auryn, who, after being diagnosed with profound deafness in both ears, will soon experience the sound of her parents’ voices for the first time. Auryn’s family, navigating financial and health challenges since her birth in February 2022, received support from Good Morning Angels and the dedicated team at Operation Healing Hands to secure the life-changing cochlear implant procedure she needs.

Auryn, named after her father Nico’s grandmother with a Gaelic name meaning “gold,” was diagnosed with profound deafness earlier this year. The two-year-old can deep base sounds, but not voices. Due to financial challenges that led her parents to forego medical aid, obtaining the costly cochlear implant, priced at R550,000, became an insurmountable obstacle.

“It was devastating to learn that our daughter couldn’t hear us,” said Nico. “How did we miss this? It’s heart-breaking, but with the support of Good Morning Angels, Operation Healing Hands, and our family, we now have hope that she will be able to hear and communicate with us.”

Now, through the generosity and collaboration of Operation Healing Hands and Good Morning Angels, the path to sound has become a reality.

Brenché Loubser from Operation Healing Hands stepped in to assist. Southern ENT will supply the cochlear device at a reduced cost of R150,000, a discount of R100,000. Additionally, hospital costs were lowered, with medical staff donating their time and expertise. With R100,000 still needed to cover the procedure scheduled for 12 November at Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital, Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels Fund will provide the remaining amount to ensure Auryn can hear for the very first time.

“Helping Auryn is one of those moments that reminds us why we do what we do,” Jacaranda FM’s breakfast host Martin Bester shares. “Knowing she’ll hear her parents’ voices and laughter, the sounds of life we sometimes take for granted, is beyond special. It’s a privilege to be part of this journey for her and her family.”

Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels initiative has dedicated itself to uplifting lives across South Africa. Through the generosity of sponsors, partners, and listeners, this initiative provides financial assistance, hope, and positive change to individuals and families in need. Each week, Good Morning Angels brings the Jacaranda FM community together to make a lasting impact, fostering compassion and unity for all South Africans.
