National Women’s Day is commemorated in South Africa on 9th August and is celebrated through the month of August . The day commemorates the 1956 march of approximately 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria.


To celebrate this special day and Women’s Month, Johannesburg Opera is proud to present their concert The Power of a Woman’s Voice, taking place at the historic Northwards House in Parktown on Sunday 28th August at 15h00.


What better way to celebrate women than through music, and to show the power that a woman holds!
Says Phenye Modiane, Founder and Managing Director of Johannesburg Opera; “Women play a vital role in opera and the entertainment industry in general. I am excited that Johannesburg Opera can put a spotlight on young, talented women during this women’s month and I can’t wait to see them in action and to share this concert with Jozi.


The Power of a Woman’s Voice stars and all-female cast, showcasing the talents of performers Khayakazi Madlala, Yolisa Ngwexana (sopranos), and Asisipho Petu (mezzo-soprano); all superbly accompanied by Annalien Ball on piano.
They will take the audience on an emotional journey and entertain you with many of your favourite opera arias and ensembles including Ebben? Ne Andro Lontana; Seguidilla; I Feel Pretty; Sull’aria; The Flower Duet, Barcarolle… and many more.

Tickets are R300 per person including snacks, coffee, tea, wine and the performance.
There are limited tickets available at a discounted fee of R220, this seating offering a side-view of the stage.

Johannesburg Opera was founded by Phenye Modiane in 2019 with a mission to keep opera alive in Gauteng. Mr. Modiane is the Managing Director of Johannesburg Opera and is best known as an opera singer. He has performed in various operas, worked with different orchestras, conductors, concert producers, and event companies.
Johannesburg Opera is looking to bring exciting opera singing and great theatre performances to our audiences with the slogan “a song for you”. This performing arts and entertainment company, focussing on opera related productions, concerts, and events, will nurture talented individuals for quality vocal performances and all-round theatre artists.
Johannesburg Opera will focus on development programmes for young people in rural and disadvantaged communities. Johannesburg Opera will strive to challenge the conventions of art and not be confined to the traditional operatic repertoire.
Johannesburg Opera is looking to transform the art of opera and we are driven to creating the opportunities to feed the hunger for great performances to our stakeholders. Johannesburg Opera aims to expose opera to varied audiences from different generations and communities. Johannesburg Opera is driven by excellent vocal performance, presentation, and theatre.
Johannesburg Opera supports education and the development of South African singers and is looking forward to creating an academy that will offer talented young singers, with no formal training and from previously disadvantaged communities, the opportunity to develop their singing ability and to gain performance experience through the academy.
