Must read

Hosting the first World Rowing regatta on the continent is an opportunity to introduce international travellers to good old African hospitality and festivities at Roodeplaat Dam from 21 to 24 September.

The action on the dam during the 2023 World Rowing Masters Regatta will be complemented by the entertainment on the shore during the showpiece. Spring is in full swing making Roodeplaat Dam the perfect setting for a drink on the banks.

Africa’s first World Rowing Regatta will celebrate South Africa’s rich heritage and immense cultural diversity which includes African dancers, interactive drumming, and gumboot dancing as part of the festivities.

The regatta will kick off in style on 21 September with opening ceremony acts that symbolise the eclectic beauty of African culture. A praise singer will open the festivities at 17:30 followed by gumboot dancers, and the country flag procession involving 43 countries. Star South African musician Majozi will bring the night to an emphatic close with feel-good vibes and glistening beats.

Each evening from Monday to Sunday will be rounded off with live music performances by local artists to the backdrop of African vibes. The penultimate night of the regatta hot South African band, 4am, is set to get spectators and rowers in a party mood.

Sports will be able to keep one eye on the rowing action and the other on the Rugby World Cup as some of the games, including the clash between the Springboks and Ireland will be shown live on Saturday.

No South African experience will be complete without staring into a bushveld fire. Bonfires will be lit every night ensuring each day ends with an obligatory chat around the bush television.

In addition, the African marketplace will showcase more than 20 stalls featuring a feast of locally made souvenirs including art and crafts from South Africa’s various cultural groups including Ndebele, Zulu, Pedi, and Tswana.

More than 10 food stalls will be available during the regatta catering to many different tastes and dietary needs of spectators.
