Jon Stewart’s latest Daily Show appearance was an unusual one — in the wake of the tragedy in Charleston, South Carolina, where Dylann Roof killed six women and three men Wednesday, Stewart decided to forego his usual jokes completely.
Instead, he gave a powerful commentary of the tragic event and society’s flawed reaction to it. “I’m confident though, that by acknowledging it, by staring into that, and seeing it for what it is … we still won’t do jack s***.”
Stewart talks about the lengths to which the U.S. will go to protect the freedom of its people while failing to recognize the deeply rooted racism tearing the country apart. “We’ve invaded two countries, and spent trillions of dollars, and thousands of American lives. And now fly unmanned death machines over like five or six different countries, all to keep America safe. (…) Nine people, shot in the church — what about that?”
He also slams the media for using nuanced language to describe the tragic event. “This one is black and white. There’s no nuance here,” he says.
