JOSHUA NA DIE REËN EXPANDS HIS MUSICAL JOURNEY WITH THE ALTERNATIVE PROJECT, SEUNS VAN VLUG

One of South Africa’s most beloved artists, Joshua na die Reën (JNDR), takes a bold step forward with a new alternative project that promises to redefine his musical career in 2025.

After eleven years of captivating audiences with his unique contemporary solo sound in the Afrikaans music industry, JNDR embarks on a brand-new collaborative journey with SEUNS VAN VLUG, an alternative music project that introduces a whole new dimension to his artistry.

This new direction will not be seen merely as the work of a solo artist but rather as a group – a collaboration of talented musicians who bring a unique and powerful sound to the stage – embracing a more dynamic band-oriented approach and offering a fresh, alternative experience.

This expansion means that JNDR now operates within three distinct dimensions. First, Joshua na die Reën as everyone knows him – theatre-style performances where audiences can experience his music in a contemporary format. Second, Alleen op die Bergpiek, a deeply meditative experience that is not a traditional show but rather a ceremony where music and meditation intertwine. And now, third, SEUNS VAN VLUG – a completely alternative experience that belongs on festival stages or as part of an alternative rock show lineup.

SEUNS VAN VLUG consists of five core members, each bringing a unique contribution to the project: Jacques De Villiers, who not only serves as a songwriter but also handles lead vocals, keytar, and keyboards; Stephen Jonathan on guitar; Stanley June on bass guitar and responsible for audio mastering; Lardo De Beer on drums; and Andy Maritz, who oversees production and mixing.

The name group’s name carries the signature symbolism for which Joshua na die Reën is known. At first glance, it might seem as if the sons are fleeing from something, but the true meaning of the name lies in recognizing that we are the descendants of flight – we already know how. Everyone dreams at some point in their lives of being able to fly, and it is this universal connection that the group aims to share with their audiences. The stage becomes a meeting point where music and emotion merge, allowing the audience to soar alongside the music. Our feet may be on the ground, but our essence and being recognize the freedom of the skies.

Their first single, called KOMPAS, was written by Jacques de Villiers and further developed and arranged by the band. Artwork done by Danielle Joubert.

This track carries the theme of journey, introspection, and the search for answers.

“Ek staan verward hier op ‘n kruispad,
met ‘n kompas in my hand,
maar die rigting wat dit wys het ek reeds geloop.”

(I stand confused here at a crossroads,
with a compass in my hand,
but the direction it points to, I’ve already walked.)

The lyrics speak of an internal struggle and hope for new beginnings, even when faced with uncertainty. The quest for answers and meaning becomes a thread throughout the song, leading the listener to the idea that even in the unknown, there lies the possibility of hope and renewal.

Although the song was originally 5 minutes long, it has been reworked into a radio-friendly version for airplay.

With the launch of SEUNS VAN VLUG, Joshua na die Reën embarks on a new era of creativity and experimentation, and 2025 promises to be a year of transformative musical experiences for his fans.
