Kwenzo Ngcobo urges youth to get tested
This past weekend, leading actor, Kwenzo Ngcobo attend the Durban July merging style with purpose by wearing a designed Imprint ZA suit with prints featuring condoms and empowering messaging to inspire South Africa’s youth to undergo HIV testing and combat stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS.
Kwenzo unpacks more here about his decision to advocate for HIV awareness:
What motivated you to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS?
Misinformation and stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS continue to persist. My passion for this collaboration was driven by the countless stigmas and misconceptions that still surround the virus. This is a call to action for us all to stay up to date with the world around us and choose ForeverWena!
How do you believe your involvement will impact the fight against HIV and AIDS, especially within the Durban community?
Not only am I from KZN, but I would also like to use this opportunity to engage young people in the conversation about HIV and AIDS.
Young people are the future, and focusing this largely within the Durban community, their involvement is crucial in the fight against HIV and AIDS. KZN is the province most affected by HIV with an infection rate of 27.7%.
Can you share any personal experiences or stories that have influenced your passion for this cause?
I’ve witnessed firsthand misconceptions and stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS in everyday conversations. It’s disheartening to see how these myths are often accepted as facts. This has fueled my commitment to join the #ForeverWena campaign, which aims to openly and effectively facilitate educational discussions on these important issues.
What message did you hope to convey to your fans and the public through your participation in this campaign at Durban July?
I wanted to emphasise the importance of understanding the facts about HIV and AIDS, debunking myths, and misinformation. And I want to encourage everyone to take action, get tested and know your status.
