Leaders in sports and entertainment set to inspire youth

It is no secret that South Africa’s youth are faced with multiple challenges after having completed school or their tertiary education. Stats SA has revealed that youth unemployment in South Africa is currently at 65%. While statistics like these are sobering for those entering the job market, Nedbank is dedicated to tackling this issue head-on as it continues to roll out its YouthX movement, which aims to empower the youth with access to resources, mentorship and inspiration to unlock their potential.

On 8 October 2022 Nedbank will be hosting its second YouthX Live event. The Sports and Entertainment YouthX Live event, which will take place at Carfax in Johannesburg, is a hybrid event allowing those unable to join in person to still attend and be inspired by local industry leaders. All events are free via access passes from Ticket pro link.

‘We created YouthX to connect passionate youth with like-minded individuals to prepare and empower them to make a positive impact in their lives and contribute meaningfully to their communities based on our awareness of the country’s socioeconomic challenges. Nedbank is committed to the economic empowerment of the youth in South Africa, with 7 000 unemployed graduates appointed at the bank and our partners over the past three years. We urge young people to register, join the movement and learn from our changemakers and to be equipped with much-needed financial education to make better money choices,’ says Nedbank’s Executive Head for Marketing and Communications, Nthabiseng Matshekga.

Sports presenter and 2022 Nedbank Changemaker Julia Stuart says: ‘The YouthX initiative is phenomenal. It is so important for big corporations like Nedbank to be directly involved in creating a better future for the youth of this country. And it is something I would have loved to have around when I was starting out simply because there was so much I just didn’t know before diving into the deep end. The opportunity to learn from people who are currently leaders in their field is a huge bonus.’

Guests will attend masterclasses from award-winning film director Keitumetse Qhali, also known as Director Kit; sports broadcaster Julia Stuart; e-sports star Thabo Moloi; and fitness influencer Chantel Struwig. Joining the changemakers, Thapelo Tsiu, a senior manager at Nedbank, will share valuable tips on the basics of starting a small business. The event will feature performances from mainstream artists throughout the day and competitions with loads of awesome high-value prizes to be won.

By entering the YouthX Awards, entrants stand a chance of being mentored by industry leaders and have their studies or business ideas funded, this ultimately helping them unlock their potential. Last year Keitumetse Pule was able to kick-start her business when she was crowned Changemaker of the Year and had her app idea funded. Award entries are open until November and can be submitted via www.unlocked.me.
