BEYOND VULNERABILITY: AWE-INSPIRING EVENT PROVES THAT NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE
There’s nothing quite as paralysing as revealing your greatest perceived weakness to others. In Lizette Volkwyn’s case, that weakness is singing.
An expert in her field with a stellar reputation for helping others achieve the impossible, Lizette’s decision to ‘walk the talk’ and face her own imperfections, led to a transformational event, which took place at Casa Toscana in Pretoria on 19 August 2023.
A dynamic writer, master life coach and human lie detector, Lizette is unconventional and unpredictable – you never know what she’s going to do next. The event, THE POWER OF BEING COACHABLE, followed suit, with Lizette demonstrating that the unimaginable can be achieved when you’re willing to become vulnerable.
Unsurprisingly, tickets sold out within days, with people keen to gain insight into her life while learning how to harness the power of vulnerability in their own. Besides featuring the singer and radio personality Martin Bester as MC, several celebrities, including actresses Marijke Coetser and Juanita de Villiers, Real Housewives of Pretoria stars Marié Bosman and Renske Lemmerding, and TikTok influencer Chané Grobler, attended the glamorous luncheon.
The aim of the event was to debunk the myth that some people are perfect and that they have everything they want in life. “In the coaching industry you tend to only show your best side. This has led to the perception that I am always happy and that for me, success is easily achieved, but nothing could be further from the truth,” says Lizette. “The aim of the event was to give people a glimpse behind the scenes and to show them that by facing my fears and being vulnerable I could achieve my goal. Even more, I wanted to prove to them that they can do the same.”
After sharing insight into her experience – that was captured in a documentary highlighting her thought process and journey, and her inability carry a tune – she ended the event by singing a cover of Miley Cyrus’ The Climb with singer Stephanie Baartman, which left the audience in awe.
Stephanie was Lizette’s singing coach and while she is a musical master, she has never trained others in the art of singing. The goal of their ‘experiment’ was to prove that when we are willing to try, willing to be vulnerable, and willing to follow the directions of an expert or specialist, anything is possible, despite our perceived limitations.
“Stephanie’s musical talent, her spontaneous approach to life and her kind heart made her the ideal candidate to join me on this journey. There were instances when doubt almost crippled my resolve, moments when turning back seemed tempting. But, journeying into the raw realm of vulnerability, I found wings to rise above my deepest fears. While I was learning from Stephanie, she made me feel completely safe, even at my most vulnerable,” explains Lizette.
According to Baartman, which has since made the bold decision to study music so she can help more people achieve their singing goals, the project was exciting, but also more challenging than she initially anticipated: “There were times when I thought that I bit off more than I could chew, but I am delighted that we saw it through. I am immensely proud of what Lizette achieved, and I am so grateful to have been a part of her journey. It changed my life.”
With the core theme of vulnerability, the event presented the perfect opportunity for Lizette to launch her book, Triumph in Vulnerability, in which each chapter is a testament to the beauty of growth. She shares: “In our most fragile moments, there’s an indomitable spirit waiting to emerge. My book encapsulates a transformative journey, reminding us that when we embrace our vulnerabilities, we are unstoppable.”
Triumph in Vulnerability is now available online and in all good bookstores. More than a hundred copies of the book have already been sold.
Ahead of the event, Lizette’s promise to attendees was simple: “Expect the unexpected!”. She not only delivered on her promise, but by redefining the narrative of vulnerability and showing what is possible, she left her audience awe-struck and inspired.
“For too long, vulnerability has been mislabelled as a weakness. In truth, it’s a powerhouse of our emotional and mental framework. It’s in embracing vulnerability that we shatter our self-imposed boundaries, daring to grow, learn, and evolve in ways we never thought possible,” she concludes.
