M Field has released his sophomore EP Re: M Field on Leafy Outlook. The EP comes out with a video to the tropical flavoured “Jolly Roger”, following previous singles “House & Leisure”, “Block Universe” and “Hyenas”.

“This second EP, like my first,” the London-based artist explains, “is a collection of songs spanning time with some thematic links and a certain mood but no grand overarching concept.” Having not released as much music as he would have wanted by this stage in his career, the project has allowed Field “to revisit old ideas with fresh purpose and whole heart”.
He reflects on the “considerable hoard of half-finished, half-baked, stale, richly matured, dusty, beautifully aged etc songs and ideas” that he’s become attached to over time; “not just to the actual material itself but to the promise that comes with their incompleteness.”
“On the other hand,” he explains, “I have changed over time and in some ways I might have learned some things, and so looking back I sometimes feel a mixture of admiration and embarrassment.” Field has come to appreciate that art needn’t be rushed, that “ideas are just ideas, and their age doesn’t make them more or less worthwhile.”
Those who have followed M Field’s short solo career will be familiar with his playful approach. His excellent Bullion produced M Field EP was released last September and drew praise from Radio 1, 6 Music, NPR, DIY, The Line of Best Fit, Crack Magazine, Pitchfork and Fader who included song “Andrew” in among their best tracks of 2021.
Re: M Field EP, however, was produced with Beatenberg bandmate and long-term collaborator Ross Dorkin, the first time the pair have worked together on music as London residents.
Matthew Field already earned his stripes over the last two decades as one of the most interesting and unique voices in music helming Cape Town band Beatenberg. The band produced South Africa’s biggest ever airplay hit (Pluto) and has had record-breaking domestic critical and chart success, winning seven South Africa Music Awards for their debut album and releasing multiple number ones.
