When it comes to premium award-winning drinks, South Africans know quality, and there’s a new contender shaking things up. Cincoro Tequila, the ultra-premium brand founded by basketball royalty Michael Jordan and four fellow NBA owners, has officially touched down in Mzansi.
CINCORO means “FiveGold” in Spanish (Cinco Oro). It represents the 5 highly competitive, rival founders coming together over their shared commitment to creating the Gold Standard in Tequila.
An exclusive launch was held in Cape Town in March, which brought together the country’s finest tastemakers, culture shapers, and connoisseurs, including industry household names like Joao Paulo De Saude, Rolo Rozay, and Bubble Koppe founder, Justin Ronné. The event was a first taste of what is set to become SA’s next luxury must-have, featuring a limited release of Michael Jordan sneakers. Emphasizing the brand’s premium status and connection to Michael Jordan, 23 guests attended the event, the number worn by Michael during his illustrious career.
The idea of Cincoro originated from a dinner conversation in 2016 between Jordan (Charlotte Hornets), Jeanie Buss (Los Angeles Lakers), Wes Edens (Milwaukee Bucks), Wyc Grousbeck, and Emilia Fazzalari (Boston Celtics). They had come for NBA-related meetings, but as the night unfolded the dinner conversations became more personal. They discovered a shared love and passion for tequila and they decided to create a tequila so smooth and complex that it could compete against the world’s best cognacs and whiskies.
Rushing the process was not an option as perfection was their desired outcome. They decided to go straight to the source: the heart of Jalisco, Mexico, where the world’s best agave is grown. They worked alongside master distillers, agave farmers, and industry experts, refining their approach until they found the perfect balance. With six years of meticulous craftsmanship and a unique blend of highland and lowland 100% Blue Weber Agave, the award-winning Tequila was born.
This is not your typical shot-and-lime tequila. Slow-cooked, aged in ex-American whiskey barrels, and designed for sipping, Cincoro is a premium, high-end experience. The unique 5-sided bottle represents the 5 founders and features 23-degree angles inspired by Michael Jordan’s jersey number.

The launch was a fitting welcome for the luxury high-end newcomer in South Africa, with a curated experience that introduced guests to the status and art of sipping tequila, a trend that’s quickly catching on in the local luxury scene.
